The Piazza del Mercato is just behind the Piazza del Campo on the back of the City Hall. I would advice the Antica Trattoria Papei for a good lunch or dinner. And if you want some lovely street food you should try one of the delicious panini from Gino Cacino Alimentari. Do not forget the glass of wine!!

Nice area, a less then 2 minute walk from the piaza del campo. Nice view to the south of Siena. Restaurants here seemed to be really nice, we can recommend the Trattoria Papei, very friendly staff, good food for an good price, the pasta with duck-sauce was fantastic.....and we went home drunk because of a lot of free refills.....I wish to be there now!

The Piazza del Mercato is just behind the Piazza del Campo on the back of the City Hall.
What a great way to mingle with the locals; great place to find souvenirs. Don't miss all the food vendors located under the entrance bridge to the Fortenzza. Piazza del Mercato is a wonderful restaurant with plenty of space inside and outside.
There is so much of history in this old section of an old city. It can sometimes be overwhelming. The Piazza forms part of a ''must see'' range of attractions including the magnificent Duomo which are within an easy walk of each other. It is noteworthy that to patronize the cafes on the Piazza will cost more than it would in the less touristy sections of Siena.
It is a great city center and there are a lots of excellent eateries. At the Esperanza the owner was there and personally made us feel at home. The food is fantastic all over Italy. The food was classical not complicated and very tasty. My friends and my vegetarian in-laws were all well catered for and enjoyed. A really lovely little piazza with views over the hills below. It hosts the veggies market here each Wednesday and an antiques market on a certain Sunday each month.

I'm not really that interested in antiques, but there were great stalls selling historical cards, photos and memorabilia of the Palio, as well as very good stamp and coin stalls.
There are lots of nice shops with unique items that you won't find anywhere else. Be sure to stop in for a few gifts or just window shopping. The staff were very helpful even though they were really busy.
The square and the tower make a stunning sight. It is always buzzing with activity, interesting things are always going on. Walk through the town, which takes a while to get up to by escalators, because this is a hill town.
I recommend you to visit Piazza del Mercato.

We stopped here briefly to visit the antique market which takes place on the third Sunday of the month from about 9 AM to 6 PM. They sell antiques and collectibles. It's very local which is nice.

There is also a weekly flea market on Wednesdays in Siena starting around at 8 AM. It's pretty big and located at the area between the Lizza gardens and the Medici Fortress (right next to the NH Siena Hotel). It's about a 10 minute walk from Piazza del Campo.

The Piazza del Mercato is in a quiet street behind Il Campo and not as has been described as the site of the Wednesday market!!
It is surrounded by a few restaurants and has views over the valley.

Despite the fact that this piazza is located right behind Piazza del Campo it's pleasantly quiet. Part parking lot, part market square it still holds a nice atmosphere. A flea market is held here every wednesday and the sight from the square towards the hills beneath is very fine. In the middle of everything is a large oval roof where the square traders have their stands. It´s humourously called the Tartarugone (The turtle). There are also some restaurants around this square.

Not really a market but it is a place that would be worth walking around. It is at the back of city hall and next to the Piazza del Campo.

As the name suggests Piazza del Mercato is a market place but it's open only certain days of the week. The piazza is located right behind the Palazzo Pubblico so its rear facade forms one side of the piazza. The center of it is occupied by an oval-shaped loggia called Tartarugone (Big Turtle) as its roof reminds of a turtle's shell. There is a good restaurant there named Antica Trattoria Papei.

Worth a short detour from the main sights of Siena but on a summer day this place can feel very crouded.

Piazza del Mercato is a good example for how abound great historical architecture is in Italy. The view is great, the hall is in itself a nice example of an significant old construction, and if there is some festivity filling it with life (say, artistry as at Notte Bianca on June 21), it can be nice there. But even than, the place is full and loud of cars, and the majority of the hall has no lighting and no internal structure. (Maybe its another thing at market times.)
