Old School Italian Craftsmanship.

I echo all of the above. Forget all the tourist shops selling crap and visit this unassuming little atelier for a true Sienese piece of craftsmanship. I bought a leather journal to document my travels and don't regret it one bit. I wish I had bought more and will do when next in town. Mr Nannini is getting on but clearly loves his work so I dare say he will be around for a while yet. He is a nice man, happy to discuss choices (if you speak Italian) and have a nice chat too. Added to that his work is exquisite. Do pay him a visit when in Siena: through the gate take the right branch street and he is about five minutes down on left.

True craftsmanship

I love journals and paper and was looking to buy an authentic keepsake from my travels to Tuscany. This is the genuine article, and one of the last remaining artisans in Siena. The owner, Senore Nannini makes leather-bound books in a workshop right at the back of the store. I bought a red leather journal with handmade paper with pressed flowers in the paper and would have bought more if I could carry them. I also got some handmade cards and stationary, all for a very reasonable price. This store won't be here forever, so I would recommend a visit if you come to Siena.

Italians love their paper...for writing, wrapping and reading.

I purchased many sweet beautiful quality notes to bring home as gifts and to keep. The store is a treasure and was a must visit on my trip. It is just off the main square so it is easy to locate!

Wonderful

One of our best experiences in Siena! Beautifully crafted paper, journals and photo albums. I loved that you could see his workshop in the back of the shop. Very kind and helpful man who makes and sells everything.

Great place to find unique gifts. A must for anyone into quality handmade items.

Made in Siena: hand-bound leather albums, books, hand-made paper, hand-printed writing paper, cards and invitations
Jun 2015 • Solo
This shop is one of the few remaining genuine artisan workshops in Siena. The owner, Mario Nannini, has been making leather-bound books, paper and marbled paper for 63 years. He also designs and engraves invitations, writing paper and cards and business cards. If you don't find the colour or size you are looking for he can make items to order. I ordered two photo albums and within three days he had produced the most beautifully hand-crafted leather-bound albums, the inside covers lined in silk and both in boxes made by hand out of beautifully decorated paper he made himself.

So many (virtually all) shops in Siena now sell mass-produced knick knacks or generic products not made locally let alone on the premises. If you want something unique and beautiful visit La Stamperia and you will find a true craftsman at work. Artisans like Mario Nannini need our support if we want to stop their traditional skills from dying out.

A workshop from another time
Aug 2013 • Solo
Mr Nannini is an elderly man, but still full of energy and love for his disappearing work. You can't go at his workshop with a USB key, asking to print a JPEG image simply because they don't use anything digital. All is done as it was long time ago. The paper they use, tha Amalfi paper that Frederick II king of Sicily forbade in favour of parchment as more long-lsting (but still there are documents written in Amalfi paper dating back to the XIV century): is something that you need to touch with your fingers to feel what intense emotions it can give you. Books and notebooks painstakingly made with incredible paintings drawn on leather by his wife Giselda, braeathtaking bookmarks (physical, for real books, not for browsers ...) and a totally mechanical printing machine, actually astonishing if you have the chance to see it when printing some incredible cards. The workshop is located near Porta Camollia, where the city walls opens towards Florence. Don't miss it!!!
