hidden away

with only some 50 people today in the Jewish community of Siena, the Synagogue is more of historic importance then of actual relevance. a little table at the entrance in the hidden away small pathway is the only hint of it.

A hidden gem

We found this randomly on a walk through town. There is a sign on the tour for tour times. The provided guide was excellent. She talked about the synagogue as well as the community.

We were walking around Siena on the day of the Palio and the Sinagoga had hours posted. We knocked and were provided a private tour which presented what might be considered an alternative history of Italy. Jews were only allowed to be merchants or money lenders, so the architects were Catholics and components of the Sinagoga closely resemble a baroque church, with marble altars and an ornate ceiling. Second floor has a exhibit on Jewish humor, with Woody Allen jokes in Italian.

Random Visit

My wife said let’s look for the synagogue as it is near. After a week we finally found it on a Sunday as it was opening its door for a tour. Cost 4€ each and was very worth the visit. The building is deceptively like other local apartment buildings. Inside is lovely. The synagogue is on the first level and is a lovely place of worship it reaches to the third level where the women congregate.

The tour guides were well informed and had excellent English. We learnt a lot about the history of the Jewish people in the area and how they were treated by the local inhabitants. Excellent time spent and highly educational.

A Little Jewel
Oct 2018 • Couples
This hidden jewel...beautiful, spiritual and extraordinary. The history of the Jews of Siena is different from the history of the Jews of Rome and other city states of early Italy. It was fascinating and a great learning experience.

A very worthwhile experience right outside the square

It's emotionally difficult to visit Jewish sites in Europe. Undoubtably one faces the harsh truth of a community nearly brought to extinction by the Nazi. A once thriving community, no longer. But in Sienna, the guide made the experience colorful and hopeful amidst the sad realities. Very much worth a visit.

Great attraction to visit, especially if you are Jewish

We did not expect much, as this synagogue does not advertise itself anywhere.

However, we were enchanted by the inside settings, the tour lady and fascinating history behind the building and Siena overall.

This place is a nice break from Palio di Siena talk which seems every Siena local can talk about.

From outside you wouldn't think that is is worth to step in. But when you ar in you will love this place. Specifically if you are Jewish as you get a very detailed explanation about the history of the Jews in Siena.

Beautiful and meaningful synagogue. As an American Jew, learning about the history of the Jewish community of Siena was incredibly meaningful and inspiring, and how this small but ancient community continues to exist and live in the city today. Lucia gave me a wonderful private tour when I visited, answering all my questions about the gorgeous synagogue sanctuary and Sienese Jewish community. After visiting many beautiful churches and Christian religious sites in Siena and throughout Italy, it was very special for me to visit a location associated with my own religion, during my time in Siena.

Thank you for a wonderful tour and for your kindness. I look forward to visiting again soon!
