There are pretty frescoes in this church but entry is chargeable, however this one is not like the cathedral of Florence where entry is free. I think that rather than charging for entry, it would be better to charge for a guided tour. It is not normal that to practice a religion, you have to pay an entrance fee.

It alone would probably be worth a visit to San Gimignano and, together with the urban and rural landscape in which it is immersed, it is its main attraction. Not so much for the bare, however beautiful and unusual façade on the harmonious Piazza del Duomo, but rather for the interiors (unfortunately, strictly for a fee) completely frescoed, and in an excellent state of conservation, by first-rate fourteenth and fifteenth century artists. The chapel of Santa Fina frescoed by Ghirlandaio offers an unrepeatable example of Renaissance painting, but the counter-façade with the Last Judgment by Taddeo di Bartolo and above all the two naves, completely covered with frescoes, the most famous and rightly those by Federico and Lippo Memmi, also stand out , but those of Bartolo di Fredi are also noteworthy. Plan at least twenty minutes to observe them calmly (although the flow of people makes this rather difficult during peak hours).

The ticket office did not let in a group of 50 people who arrived at 4.45pm (15 minutes late) on Saturday 9 December 2023. There was nothing that could be done. Having a little flexibility doesn't hurt, especially when a group of tourists arrives. We weren't able to enter even during the liturgy because if we entered they wouldn't let us out until after mass was over (worse than a kidnapping). We didn't insist because when the supervising staff has a limited mentality you can't do anything about it.

This morning, during the religious service, we were forbidden entry telling us to come back later for the guided tour (for a fee).

I find it unfair to pay a ticket to enter a sacred place.
It is one thing to pay for a guided tour, another to have to pay a ticket without any interest for the visit.

A city that disappoints in every respect. Tourist trap, once you leave San Gimignano, you will never return, even by accident!

The visit to the beautiful Cathedral of S Gimignano did not disappoint. However, there are some details that we suggest (group of 6 friends) improve. Meanwhile, at the ticket office there is no discount for those over sixty-five, it doesn't exist! Furthermore, with the ticket (5 euros per person for entry only) no support is given, neither paper nor earphones. You can scan a QR code to hear the audio guide once you enter. However, there are many contraindications: if you turn up the volume it annoys other visitors, sometimes your cell phone runs out of battery, neighbors interfere with what you are listening to at that moment, etc. Strongly advised to do so as soon as possible

This was by far the most impressive cathedral we went to on our Tuscany trip (much more impressive even than Pisa). The frescos and art work are generally in great condition and the whole cathedral is a riot of colour. Get a combined ticket with the Grosso Tower and check it out!

We went today to visit the enchanting location. All good if it weren't for the unpleasant person who is used to treat, or rather "mistreat" the tourists who want to come in for a moment to see the works of art. Not only did he have a different (more condescending) treatment with the Chinese tourists whom he allowed to cross the initial limit reserved for "those who must not pray", but when we pointed this out to him he treated us very badly, saying that if it had been for he didn't even let tourists in.
He continued to insult us as we were leaving. Well done to the rude and misfit! And this guy is supposed to be a public person? Then we ask ourselves why young people turn away from the church? Dear Curia, choose your all-rounders better.
What a shame, what a fool!!!

Impressive cathedral with spectacularly restored frescoes. Should be a must visit when you are in San Gimignano. Remember that this is a church: there is a dress code and silence is expected. A fresco series of the Old Testament is accompanied by a second series of the New Testament on the opposite side of the church. The frescoes of the Last Judgment are remarkable.

I gave a low rating not for the cathedral which has some wonderful frescoes, but for the staff and the lack of clarity. Neither on the official website nor at the ticket office is there a ban on entering with animals (not even cats in backpacks). So you enter the ticket office, pay and then at the entrance to the Duomo you discover the bitter surprise!

Beautiful Duomo located next to the Bell Towers. Wonderful painted ceilings and walls. Need a little bit of time to appreciate.
