Most people just drive trough Piombino to get to the ferry port to Elba but if you get past the industrial area and head to "Centro" you'll discover a picturesque historic centre. The pedestrian road you will lead you to one of the most spectacular "Piazza" in Italy. A Perfect place for a relaxing stopover with plenty restaurants nearby and a sandy beach.

Lovely little town with beautiful views of the sea. On a clear day, you can see the island of Elba. Nice little cafes in town with plenty of locals.

A quite unique open space with a lovely feel and great views over to Elba and beyond- wit a number of small cafe's about. A nice place to stroll and sit and watch the world go by

Piazza Giovanni Bovio is very windy offering a view of Elba Island. Alas the sign pointing to Elba was not clearly marked to distinguish it from other islands and the cloudy weather did not help.

Beautiful views from here, especially to neighbouring islands such as Elba, but there is little or no shade, so not the best place to be on a hot day.
The large inlaid compass shows the names of various winds and the directions from where they arrive here.
The old town itself is a joy to wander around. The Tourist Info Office has a free map with a walking route clearly marked on it. It guides you round the main points of interest and the best viewpoints (of which there are several) There are also helpful info boards at the main sights. This town may be small but it is very tourist friendly.

The day I arrived in Piombino this was the first place I visited. Very near to the place I stayed in . Certainly worth. You can have a great view of the old town and also the Piombiono channel and the islands nearby , including famous Elba where Napoleon spent an year of his life , before returning to France and after being sent to Saint Helene ... you will see tourists , a lot of locals ( in my case as it was winter I had a great impression seeing most of locals enjoying the place )

Love this little town my wife and I went to cafe Nanni for fruit and strawberry Mojitos which were fantastic for Apertitivos which is when you get a drink with a snack before dinner, wish we had that in the states.

Is there a sandy beach in Piombino or close by (but not Elba)
thanks

Around 10 km far from piombino center (direction south) begin a long sandy beach which runs for around 20 km.
Another beautiful sandy beach is 15 minutes by car far from Piombino north direction. It’s name is Baratti.

how do you get from port to centro ? can you walk or do you need a shuttle transfer

Saluti
