This impressive marble church stands in the heart of Via Borgo, one of Pisa’s main shopping streets. It’s grand facade contains heavily stylized carved stonework. The interior is rather modest with the altar flanked by numerous organ pipes. The wooden ceiling brings ‘warmth’ to the stone church interior.

Front of church, particularly the higher up portions are very impressive. Inside of church is less so, but church is on a busy shopping, tourist street and so not too much bother to spend 5 minutes to have a quick look.

We could not see the inside of this church, which appears to only be open for services (as I found most of the churches in Pisa to be). I was there at the time of a service, with the idea that I could go in after but they closed the church immediately after the service.

Lots of churches in Pisa, but this has one of the more interesting facades. Sadly the church was shut when we visited so I can't comment on the paintings and frescoes contained within.

You pass by this beautiful church, in the center of the city, if you go towards the Tower through the historic center.
It is located inside Borgo Stretto just after Piazza Garibaldi.
The church is located on a churchyard two steps higher than the sidewalk level.
The predominant architectural style is Romanesque-Pisan with small Gothic influences.
The church, one of the oldest in Pisa and built on a pre-existing temple dedicated to Mars, is mentioned for the first time in 1016 as a Benedictine monastery, before passing to the Camaldolese monks.
The current building is the result of a series of changes also determined by calamitous events such as the earthquake of 1846 and the bombings of the Second War that gutted the church, saving only the marble façade, dating back to the 13th-14th century, one of the most spectacular. of the Pisan churches.
It is characterized in the lower part by three portals and by the writings of the early seventeenth century referring to the election of the Rector of the University.
A noteworthy detail of the façade is the aedicule with the Madonna and Child, angels and the offering abbot by Lupo di Francesco. The left wall leads to the sacristy and, from here, to the parish priest's home.
The interior houses a beautiful fourteenth-century Crucifix attributed to Nino Pisano, as well as frescoes and paintings dating from the thirteenth and eighteenth centuries. The high altar is built over the twelfth-century crypt (not open to visitors).
It is a monument to visit.

This part of Pisa was inhabited since the Etruscan times and the church was first mention in the 11th century, but over the centuries it was transformed and altered numerous times. The marble facade dates from the 14th century and is notable for its three portals in the lower part and three orders of loggias in the upper part. There were several archeological findings around the church that brought to light some phases and elements of the city’s past.

Compared with the crowded Leaning Tower, this church has few tourists passing by. A short walk from tourist crowd, it has a nice facade made of white marble. Unfortunately it was not open to public during our visit.
