This museum was a nice surprise for me and a great fun, because it covers my main career interest, the computer technology and algorithms. It is a unique experience, where you can learn a lot about the history of calculation instruments and devices, from the glorious Pisan past to the most recent days. Excellent collection, well-organized, informative and interesting!

If you are a computer nerd then this would be a must see. It is not easy to find being part of a complex of University buildings and not well signed (or well paved).

However it does have the first ever Italian computer and a host of other unique early calculators and computers both manual and electronic (including the first IBM and Apple computers and a Cray supercomputer). If like us you remember paper tape and punch card computing or loading tape reels you will be in nostalgia heaven. The signage is in Italian but on our visit the staff (who seem to be specialists from the university) were very keen to explain the exhibitions and spoke pretty good English.

The toilet facilities are limited!

I highly recommend a visit to this museum, combined with a view of the Museum of Physics Instruments.
It was a very interesting experience: you trace the history, in both areas, being able to capture the details and especially the passion and research that there was to set up the two museum sites.
I would like to thank all the staff for their availability, courtesy and professionalism.

Being in town for a few days and my partner being a maths enthusiast we considered this as somewhere that could be interesting to visit. With the website being only in Italian it was hard to know what we would find, but we decided to risk it, because why not.

We wandered through backstreets looking for the museum, following Apple maps due to lack of signage. It really wasn’t obvious where we were suppose to be, but there were some grand gates which looked a sensible place to find a museum so we wandered in.

We found a really run down, decrepit area, but Apple maps said we were in the right place, so we wandered through the deserted, rubble filled area, walking around and around different buildings trying to establish where we should be. We did find the right building but there was no entrance sign and looked closed. We ended up tugging on a door with a lock and found a member of staff who welcomed us in.

We paid the small fee and wandered around looking at the old computers. Unfortunately nothing was in English, not even a leaflet so it was a bit of a waste of time really as there was little that we couldn’t have seen in any other country.

Overall, terrible location that you wouldn’t find without a lot of persistence, could do with a face lift and nothing unique/accessible to tourists.
