As it happens with TripAdvisor, some listings get confused with other things. Started in 1688, the lighting of candles and bonfires (Luminara = Illumination) are for Saint Ranieri whose urn was placed in the cathedral that year. Every year the event is celebrated on June 16th & 17th with about 70,000 candles being lit and placed all over buildings and even floating down the Arno River. Quite a sight! They also have fireworks going off and the small town and riverfront can get very crowded.

Others are commenting on the lights along both sides of the Arno. These light are beautiful as well. It was nice to walk along the quiet river late at night with the lights reflecting off the water; very tranquil. For whatever the reason or season, the Pisa riverfront is wonderful.

This event is totally mad and totally beautiful. A crowd of 100,000 was expected for the 2017 event and it seemed like it! Every building lining the river Arno which goes through Pisa erects elaborate frames of 'holders' into which are placed small, lit candle lanterns. This takes many hours but as the sun sets around 9 p.m. the effect is stunning. Crowds and street-food stalls line both banks of the river, many regular visitors claiming a place on the Lugarno walls from 6 p.m. onwards. The majority of spectators are almost certainly locals as the event does not seem to be promoted to the tourist trade and given the sheer numbers and the availability of alcohol, the crowds are extremely well behaved. Things get noisy later on with a spectacular firework display from barges moored in the middle of the river. And keep an eye out for the rockets launched from the clock tower!

What a festivity! It is music, history, fireworks, and candles all along the river or as it is called Lungarno. The beautiful old buildings that face the Arno river, are all illuminated with candles. The day commences by stopping by to your favorite restaurant before the show commences. While strolling in the narrow streets of Pisa, music sneaks from all different corners. At 11:00 pm in the evening then is when the show of fireworks and music stars. It is just beautiful and breathtaking. Something to see!!!!

I am living and working in Pisa for three months, but only fell in love with the city a fortnight after arriving when I saw it in full glow at the Luminara. The city gets very crowded, but it is worth it for the firework display. If you are considering going, do. No Hogmany or street party will compare

We were lucky enough to be in Pisa during the feast of San Ranieri and got to see this amazing spectacle. We stayed in an apartment overlooking the river so managed to avoid the crowds below and get an amazing view. To celebrate this feast day (which is actually 17th June) the buildings along the Lungarno are decorated with white frames that hold candles the day before (16th). Once the sun has set this gives an amazing glow along the river. To top the night off, a half hour fireworks display along the river takes place. Absolutely breath taking!! I highly recommend scheduling your trip to Pisa around this time.

The Luminara is great fun, but the streets are very, very crowded. The fire works were fun, but the narration that accompanied them was, honestly, boring and unnecessary.

Every year on June, the 16th, Pisa is enlightened by thousands of candles for the patron saint's festival, S. Ranieri. All the lamps are switched off and a suffused light is provided just by candles placed at every window, every door, every bridge on the river Arno. Fireworks are usually provided as well. It is definitely worth to visit Pisa in the middle of June to have the chance to join this very traditional and suggestive festival. Definitely recommended.

The entire city comes alive with music and lights. All the homes/apartments alongside the river are decorated with lamps. There's fireworks at 11pm. There's lots of epic music playing through huge speakers and the entire town gathers on the parapet walls of the river bank, waiting for sunset, when the lights start appearing. Lots of street food, beer, and festivities! Happens on the night of June 16th.
