Although I visited the Tower buildings I did not manage to ascend the tower, so I am ot able to offer a full review. But I did manage o explore all the levels in the refurbished attached building which, at the time, housed an exhibition of a local (I think) architects. The new and robust staircase and associated landings gave access to windows affording a variety of views over Pisa. This part of the building also has a lift so is very accessible.

People, do not get confused. Most of the pictures and reviews here refer to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, not the Torre Guelfa. The Torre Guelfa is located in another part of Pisa, notebly the Cittadella Vecchia, or Old Citadel.

Torre Guelfa was once part of the town walls in Pisa. Whilst it is quite interesting to look at and still worth a look, but be warned, the site is a bit of a shambles and is currently not open to visitors.

Guelph Tower is situated on the north side of the river to the west of the city. It is a different tower than the Leaning Tower (the pictures for this place are wrong). I found a website which stated that it was supposed to be open on Fri, Sat and Sun from 3pm to 7pm but when I got there at 3pm on a Friday there was nobody there and the grills were on the door. I stayed and wandered around until 4pm then left. The area looks very run down and it doesn't look like it has been in use for some time. It was a shame as I was hoping for a nice panoramic view of the city.

The Guelph is another leaning tower built on the silty soil base of Pisa, but it's not the world renowned "leaning Tower" found in the Piazza dei Miracoli - but it's still a stunner for sure. Yes, you can climb it and the lines are much shorter, but seriously do you really need to climb two leaning towers in Pisa? You decide. Enjoy. ...

The Guelph Tower and Medici Citadel are located on the north side of the Arno River and were part of the Republican Arsenal of Pisa. The nearby Medici Arsenal was built in the 16th century as a shipyard and currently houses an exhibition on the Roman Ships of Pisa. From the tower there are great views over the city of Pisa.

if you want to climb the stairs to the top I would suggest you go off season or there will be a long line.

Prettier than I thought, but very touristy. The local restaurants where nice, the locals very nice and helpful. I do have to admit when later going to Rome the quality of food was better. I went to a gelato shop...the best in the world.

Walked across the city in blistering heat to find that it was closed. No sign of life anywhere - at 12.20pm on a Friday. No notices setting out opening hours. Very disappointing..

Intersting to see close up - and there was an exhibition in the adjoining building (interesting interior renovation) - but a shame that the tower was closed.
Look out for the Medici boatyards on the way there, and worth crossing the river to see the San Paolo facade (also closed) on the other side if you have time.
