I booked a combined ticket tour...the baptistry closed (not told this) ticket indicated it was open!
Lots of area in repair or needing it kerbs and walking area dangerous...unlevelled. Slipped once and fell another.
Scaffolding over an important Cosmos fresco etc etc.

Had a nice walk around the area of the central train station

Met wife who had travelled from Florence

Went for a drink at a bar just 80-90 yards from station exit

BAR GAMBRINUS. Avoid this bar, it is a complete rip off. They charge you around 8 euro service charge even when you order the drinks from the bar yourself

The staff have not heard of the word smile, they all have faces like spanked backsides

The place has plastic chairs and plastic tables and the odd beggar to round off a very bad experience

So avoid this place at all cost

We spent two days in Pisa and used the open top bus to tour around. The ticket lasts for 24 hours from the time you buy the ticket. Make sure you check with the guides as to times for that day, times and routes change by the day and hour. The guides we encountered were very helpful and spoke good English. The recorded information is out of date. Often it is hard to tell what you are supposed to be looking at. There is too much music between comments which is really annoying when there is so much to see and do.
Pisa is renowned for its leaning tower, we found a lot more to do. We were lucky to have glorious warm sunny days so just sitting in a Piazza people watching was fun.

The Miracles Square
On day in Pisa is not enough for all what there is to see. Still in one day(on a Sunday) I managed to walk almost the whole of the city centre.
My walk started from Palazzo dei Congressi ( a small arena) where I was attending a hiphop event, and took me along the Arno river side, dotted with beautiful buildings. It was like flowing with the river at the Sunday leisure pace that this resting day gives to all the people who stroll in the afternoon.you can sense the atmosphere of relax of the families with babies in the pram,of the couples who kiss in a romantic spot,of friends telling each other confidences, helped by the beauty of the surrounding and the flowing of the water. It is strange to imagine that in the past these places have been stage of terrible battles and unfairness. Still the past fortunately left us an incredible artistic heritage. It is in fact among all the art that my walk evolved. I left the river side to head towards Piazza dei Miracoli. Much has been written about it, as it is one of the most know and admired squares in the world. The amount of art is almost overwhelming and the beauty of everything there is enchanting. The tower of Pisa ( 56 mt high 8 floors 7 bells),with that inclined look of 4 degrees, has been masterfully restored and steadied, it's white marble polished to the original splendour and shined in the bright afternoon sun. Now the top can be reached by clinbing a winding stair with many steps.
On the left of the tower there is the cathedral. From every corner you look at it you cannot help but admire the fine details, although it is massive. Just in front of the cathedral entrance there is the Baptistery, a beautiful round medieval gothic romanic church, of such an amazing beauty which leaves you speechless . All has been written about these places, the history, the architecture ,the builders and inventors, but being there and seeing it with your own eyes is something that enriches your days. I spent sometime just sitting on the loan in the sun, soaking in the amazing energy emanating from the centuries that gave life to what will be there for a long long time, making us aware that these things are unique and never will be produced again. In fact the site is UNESCO heritage since 1987.
Of course everywhere there is a paying entrance but at least all is perfectly kept.
Only one thing I must bitterly criticize: a fee for the use of the lavatory! Appalling!

This is a review of the bus tour on red open-topped buses as in many other cities.
Good tour of the city with commentary in many languages. You can hop on and off for the day so a good way to find your way around. We were lucky that our bus did the full tour out of the city to the race course which added greatly to the enjoyment.
The ticket should be retained for a discount in trips by the company in many countries including UK.

Although the tower was nice, our car was broken into within 2 hours of landing in Italy. We parked just off the main street in Pisa. Lots of people walking by and it seemed very safe. Less than ninety minutes later we returned to broken glass and three missing carry on bags. The Caribinieri (federal cops) were no help. The local cops were sorry but could do nothing. The were too busy writing parking tickets. They did not want to know what was stolen. They just gave us the address of the local Police Station so we could file a report. They would not take a report. We called American Express to file a claim. They said that we were not covered in Iraq, Afghanistan, Italy and a couple more lawless areas. Not a good list to be on. Not to mention you are constantly harassed by street hustlers from Senegal.

The leaning tower and it's grounds are the only attraction in Pisa. Inside the compound area of the tower is heavily guarded with military personnel carrying machine guns. Outside the tower area is very nice and clean but is not patrolled or protected in any way. The main parking lot is very large and clean with plenty of parking spaces. People are everywhere, coming and going, with shuttle service drivers watching the parking lot for potential riders. We arrived in the parking lot at noon on a bright sunny day with all our belonging in the car. Within one hour or less our car was broken into and all our luggage was stolen. BROAD DAYLIGHT. Nobody reported it even though the thief's broke out a window and removed 5 suitcases, two backpacks and a carryon bag and would have to have had a large car or van to carry away all our luggage. The police would not come out and investigate the crime, we had to go to them. The police gave a report form to fill out and then told us there was nothing they could do for us and to go home. There was four other couples at the police station at the same time as us reporting the same type of crime. Those couples also lost everything they had. While talking to the people who work in and around the parking lot we were told that this type of crime happens many times a day everyday and the police DO NOT CARE.

Only had half a day in Pisa and took this open top sightseeing tour to get a feel for the area and take in as many sights as possible. We tend to do these whenever we are somewhere new to get a first taste of a city. Good value to money if you were to use it all day. Convenient hop on hop off for 24 hours or more. Very informative and educational.

Dont waste your time or money. Pisa has nothing to offer except the tower. The Cathedral and the other building are empty. Nothing to look at at all.The pavements [ sidewalks ] are in shocking condition and you spend all your time watching where your putting your feet. Beware the cafe/restraunts in the tower area, they'll ' pad ' your bill by around 10 euro's. Street sellers are everywhere. Pisa is one gigantic ash tray. The population smoke like nowhere else I have ever seen, and simply throw the rest in the street!

If you must go, then go as a day trip. Dont stay there. Base your stay in Florence, its only 40 minutes on the train from Pisa and a world of difference. It wont take more that a couple of hours to see everything Pisa has to offer.

We use these buses in most places if available. excellent either if have limited time and to get an over view of city or in the true Hoho sense and do just that. This time we just did the circuit from near the tower as only had a few hours in Pisa - oh no thats not true - we got back on it after going up tower and walking round and doing botanical garden (dont-see reviews) to go back to near station where we had parked car and couldnt be bothered to walk in heat, so better value than I thought.
Music played between commentry gets a bit tiresome - especially as same as in Florence and Genova! but on way back to car just didnt use headphones!
