Visiting the medieval part of the city, we found it in front of us. It is very tall and imposing. We enjoyed taking pictures since it is not possible to visit it. Now we know a little more about the life of the students at the nearby university. The most powerful families of the Republic of Pisa between the 11th and 13th centuries built many tower-houses. They were their homes, but also the symbol of their wealth. Those lovely "skyscrapers" that were the tower-houses were built during the Middle Ages by the most powerful families of Pisa, for residential use: the need to keep building within the city walls (for defensive reasons, of course) and the lack of land that in those days was still free, made the city develop vertically, just as it happens in modern megacities. Among the still visible examples of tower-houses worthy of attention is the Torre dei Caciaioli, in via Cavalca: today it is called Torre del Campano, for the bell placed on its top which, until the end of 1700, marked the time needed for the study for the students of the nearby university. Interesting.

This five story bell tower is located in the heart of the old section of Pisa. It was primarily used to mark the hours of classes for the nearby university. There is a small information plaque located at the tower base. Several cafes and restaurants line the narrow street leading to the tower.
