About
The museum is located in a flat on the second floor of an ancient building in the heart of Lucca, where Giacomo Puccini was born on December 22, 1858. In this house the composer spent the years of his childhood and first youth. The birth home was transformed into a museum in 1979 and carefully restored in 2011: today it looks like when young Giacomo lived there. The museum preserves Puccini’s Steinway & Sons piano on which he composed Turandot, autograph scores of youthful compositions, letters, photographs, precious drafts, such as the “libretti” of Tosca, La fanciulla del West and an extraordinary musical sketch of La bohème. Noteworthy the costume of Turandot worn by Maria Jeritza at the Metropolitan Opera House of New York in 1926. The birth home is a central element of Puccini Museum, the articulate museum complex that, following a journey along the footprints left by the great composer, rediscovers his personality, his passions, his genius.

Immerse yourself in the intimate world of the composer by visiting his home, carefully restored to offer you an authentic atmosphere. You will discover personal objects, scores, photos and furniture that testify to the life of Puccini. The museum houses an impressive collection of original documents, letters and scores that will help you better understand Puccini's creative world and the historical context in which he lived. Some rooms are reconstituted to give you an idea of the daily life of Puccini and his family. You can imagine the young Giacomo composing his first melodies. One of the highlights of the museum is the Steinway piano on which Puccini composed his last works. It is an object full of history that will transport you to the heart of musical creation.

Very interesting this museum. It is the home of the master Giacomo Puccini. It preserves many objects and memories of his life and a wonderful collection of the most beautiful stage clothes worn by the protagonists of his most important works!

Beautiful museum: Giacomo Puccini's birthplace is truly splendor!
Some of his objects are preserved here, such as the piano, some scores, his clothes and the reconstruction of his studio. From some of his letters we can deduce what a famous and nice composer he was!
The ticket office is located in the bookshop in the adjacent square, next to the statue of Puccini.
A visit suitable for everyone, even non-enthusiasts.

Pleasant and short visit to the birthplace of the sublime composer of Tosca and Bohemia. It evokes more history and lifestyle than the essence of the work, which could leave erudite opera lovers hungry for more. Nice photos, original scores. Pleasant overall

Lucca is a charming walled city with Puccini Home/Museum. From Florence (Firenze SMN station), you can have a pleasant half-day excursion to Lucca by train. Round trip train fare for an adult is only € 15.00. The train tickets can be easily purchased even via online in advance if you want to avoid currency conversion. Online ticket purchase requires you to specify train departure time. But even if you take earlier or later train than the specified time, it would not become an issue with train conductors. During our round trip train rides from Florence to Lucca, there was no ticket check at all, because they use honor system with stiff penalty for not holding train tickets. The train travel time is about 1 hour 20 minutes each way by local train which has 2nd class only. The train has its own toilet, and Lucca train station also has a free toilet at the end of Track 1 (station side). From Lucca train station, you can walk for about 15 minutes to major attractions, including Puccini Home/Museum and "San Michele in Foro" Church. As you get out of the train station, cross the street, and walk forward toward the city wall. Once you come to a broad street ("Viale Regina Margherita") that runs parallel to the city wall, turn to left. Walk along the broad street with the city wall on your right until you see the wall gate leading to the city center ("Porta S. Pietro"). Walk into the city through the gate, and turn left to follow the street named "Via della Mura Urbane" until you come to "Via Vittorio Veneto". Turn right, and follow "Via Vittorio Veneto", and pass Piazza Napoleone. Soon you will come to an impressive looking church (Chiesa di San Micehle in Foro). You will find an alley with Puccini Museum sign on the left hand side of the street across the main entrance of the church. You can walk into the alley to come to a plaza with Puccini statue and Puccini Museum on the right side. The museum ticket office is located in a building next Bistro Paris Boheme (on the right hand side of Puccini statue). With museum ticket, you can go to the museum entrance which is located on rear side of Puccini statue. The museum is filled with impressive memorabilia such as Puccini's opera scores, costumes, letters, photos, piano, etc. To opera lovers, this museum visit would be an unforgettable experience. You can have delicious lunch near Puccini Home at one of several restaurants with names of Puccini operas such as Tosca, Madam Butterfly, Manon Lescaut, Paris Boheme (La Boheme), etc. Since the city is so charming, you might be tempted to spend more time there. Although the city has taxis and buses, their routes are highly restricted, making it easier for you to just walk around. When you return to Lucca train station, be sure to stand on the correct side of the platform (Track 2) for your train back to Florence (Firenze SMN) so that you would not go to the wrong direction.

Beautiful costumes and a decent amount of information about Puccini. It was very interesting to learn about him and his life. But the costumes were my favorite.

I'm not a big opera fan. My sister-in-law is, and a Puccini fan. We visited 'the house of Puccini' when in Lucca. She loved it. I found it interesting. I appreciated the fact that the interior was 'just as it would have been'. It is a small home by today's standards, there is not a lot to see. Some significant documents for opera buffs.

I felt this place missed an opportunity to properly convey the flavour of Puccini - the displays were curiously static and I think need some advice from a curatorial expert. Even the music was playing so faintly you could barely hear it. Not worth the money, in my view.

My partner enjoyed the Museum. She thought it gave some insight into the domestic buildings you see from the outside but never had a chance to enter. I didn't think there was much to see. The drawers full of letters seemed the most interesting part but you have to be able to read Italian to appreciate them.

I don't identify with the few critical comments about this magical place. Surely it can only be dull if you're not into Puccini and operatics. In which case, why would you go anyway?
It doesn't set out to be an interactive theme park. This is a quiet, contemplative and intimate insight into the great man's life and work. It's the house where he was born and I was totally swept away by the atmospherics. Beautiful costumes, piano, countless scores and handwritten letters. The Turendot costume is amazing.
If you love opera, this is absolutely not to be missed. You will spend a very rewarding hour or so there.
