Roman walls with Medieval additions
Sep 2018 • Couples
Three towers were added during the Medieval period and it was a strong fortification system up until the WWII bombing. The majority of the walls we saw were located in the marina where our ship was docked.

Florentine Fortress
Sep 2018 • Couples
Port fortifications were built by the Florentine rulers to protect their port. Unlike other medieval Italian city states Florence was not on Sea. Livorno served as the Medici port.

Interesting and Historic Fort in Livorno
Jul 2018 • Friends
I was in Florence on business and had a day off. A colleague and I traveled to Livorno and we visited this fort. The fort is interesting and historic. The views of Livorno are marvelous from the top of the fort. I would definitely return to the fort if I ever get back to Livorno. Why not a 5 rating - good question. Sections of the fort need renovation and it was hard to figure out how to get into the fort - no signs or directions.

Amazing!
Mar 2018 • Friends
Beautiful! The romance of a port, the smell of the sea, a labyrinth of scales and rooms. A sensitive experience, full of odours, sounds and spectacular views. The entrance is free.

The Old Fort
Jan 2018 • Couples
This is the old fort at the port. Interesting enough to look around but we didn't spend a lot of time here. The new fort is also open in town.

History!
Jul 2017 • Couples
This, the old fort, protected the port for many, many years. It is a most impressive construction, and well worth a visit.

Very attractive old fort located close to the port, we had a nice gentle stroll early evening, good fresh air and not crowded with tourists, a really relaxing time

Be an explorer youself
Apr 2017 • Family
It was a cloudy day in april, so we had the caste for our own. That way we could roam the fortress, trying which doors and passages were open. Have a look in old, partly demolished tunnels, relive history in the caves ans basements. And of course, climb the tower and enjoy the view of city and harbour.
The entrace on the back side (sea) was hard to find. They should make more of it! since the fortress and the info of its history was worthwhile. For both kids and parents

Very destroyed, a ghost of the past.
Nov 2016 • Solo
Between the destroyed walls of the fortress it's difficult to imagine the past splendour of Livorno Port during Renaissance. Anyway, there're some interesting halls on the basements.

The old fort is well... Old.
Jul 2016 • Solo
The (Fortezza Vecchia) Old Fort is just that old, and nothing else. Many places in Europe with old forts have converted them into useful areas for recreation or tourism and done well with it while preserving heritage. The old Fort here is kinda crappy and doesn't look nice or useful. Too bad because it could be so much more but right now it's worth skipping completely if you're in the area. Much nicer set up in Pisa or Florence, so don't spend too much time here.
