I spent a bit of time wandering around Livorno, when i visited on a cruise. I was expecting there to be a little more fort stuff, history boards, etc, but after entering through the tunnel, all it was was a unkept park area, with some seats, a few small food stalls, and nothing much else. It still is a very impressive structure from the outside

It looks impressive from the outside as it sits alongside one of the many canals in this area of Livorno. It also has a history that dates back to Medici times right up to the period after the Second Wold War as many of citizens of the port had to live in the park within the fortress due to bomb damage of the town. It is now a park and a very ordinary one. It looks better from the outside.

Bang in the centre of town, surrounded by a canal way, this fort looks solid and impregnable from the outside. Inside, now it’s just a disused municipal park. Worth a quick wander round but not much to see.

But not much to see inside. A bit shabby and run down but still impressive surrounded by canals and built of small red bricks. A nice and pleasant green space on top entered through a cool passage way and over a small bridge. Difficult but achievable wheel chair access, although the slope makes it hard work to push. Free to eenter but not much going on.

We were on a cruise on west Mediterranean and our first stop was the city of Livorno. We had a 12 hour stop so we thought that we can visit the castle of the city. There is an interesting story behind that castle but the overall experience can last no more than 2 hours.

I was disappointed, not only was it not looked after but the whole site was a mess and it seemed an unsafe part of the city. It seemed to be a hiding place for illegal street traders possibly drug dealers. We promptly left!

We were not impressed with the fort or as it happened the whole of Livorno. We can see why most people choose to do the Pisa excursion from here.As we did the last time we were here.Would not stop off here again.

Military fort inside Venetian quarter. Inside the fort is a children's playground where our kids enjoying playing while we have a panoramic view from the fort walls on piazza della Republica.

We chose to stay in Livorno off our cruise ship and planned to look around the historic parts.
No signposting to the fort. Because of the canals the correct way is not necessarily straight ahead.
Entrance way was so low key and pathways so unkept you weren't entirely sure you'd be safe!
Park inside was nice enough to sit and cool down, although brown and dry in August.
Kids play area was closed for renovation. They could really do with tidying up the whole place.

I am in Italy on business and had the opportunity to spend a day in Livorno. I stopped in with a friend at the Fortezza Nuova. The views of the canals of "Little Venice" were great from the fort, but the fort is in poor condition. Quite run down. The park was littered and there were broken bottles - not a great thing for young children. I do not recommend visiting Fortezza Nuova except for the opportunities for excellent photographs of the canals in Livorno.

Can you walk to the city of Livorno from the cruise ship

It is not recommended from one area of the docks. I googled your question and found this
f you dock in the industrial area of the port (the case for most large cruise ships), it's not recommended to walk around in the harbor. It is too crowded and dangerous because of the many trucks, cranes, container trailers, etc. Moreover, you are 3-4 kilometers from the city center. You would lose too much valuable time.
If you dock close to the cruise terminal at Porto Mercantile, you can walk to the city center. From the pier, there are signs to the city and the nearest bus stop. Opposite the Fortezza Vecchia, one of the old forts, there is an exit gate of the port area. From there it is a 20 minute walk to the center.
