Located in the centre a market is always an interesting place to visit, and this was no exception. A lovely fresh fruit market outside, and inside the lovely market hall building, there were an array of fresh and dried meat stalls, more food stalls, as well as local crafts and goods. Prices of things were pretty average.

Livorno is a city full of life that has many restaurants and hotels. Outside the city there are two big malls. Livorno is a right place if you love the sea and sun. Don't forget to visit Mascagni lungomare at the sunset time.

Mercato Centrale of Livorno is a busy market housed in a beatiful building right in the center of the town. Here, one could soak a great atmosphere, just by watching local people going about doing their business, rubbing their shoulders with groups of tourists.

It was fascinating to see pretty little shops selling wine by liter, fresh pasta, best olive oil, cured meat, fish, fresh vegs and juicy fruits.

We stumbled into Caffe del Mercato which introduced us to Il Sincero olive oil, apparently the best extra virgin olive oil of the year. It was rather pricey (17 euros/500 ml), but we never tasted olive oil as beautiful as this. They also served fresh orange juice and great espresso.

If you are in Livorno, make sure you visit this place!

Okay, let’s get this straight from the start: although this is a fine market it is not on a par with the Boqueria in Barcelona. With that out of the way let me say that the Mercato Centrale is a lively, bustling market with lots of fish, vegetables, meat and cheese on offer.

Just inside the entrance is an area dedicated to seafood and there you will find the great variety of fish and crustaceans so typical of a continental market. The main hall provides meat and cheese, as well as coffee, pasta, sweets, biscuits and pastries.

The locals make up the bulk of visitors to the market and it is great to watch them laugh, argue and share their troubles via words, exaggerated expressions and gesticulation. My only gripe with the market is that there was not enough seating to allow you to sit back and enjoy the locals in their native habitat. The Italian way to consume coffee is to stand at the counter, so the lack of seats in understandable.

I would suggest you set aside 1-2 hours for a visit to the market, depending on how much you enjoy food and/or watching out Italian cousins interact.

Open only in the mornings (on Fridays some vendors open on the afyetnoon) the central market was rennovated some years ago, unfortunately by an architect/firm from Pisa -I say unfortunately because of the centuries-long rivalry between Livorno and Pisa. The building is (or was) one of the largest closed markets in Europe. Here you can find fresh fish, meat, cheeses, fresh pasta, anything needed for the typical Italian diet, all sold by typical Livornese merchants. Just outside are the clothing stalls where you can find some unexpected bargains, varying from cheap Chinese and Indian wares to Italian designer labels. Worth a visit if you have a morning to spare in Livorno

Quoting Emile Zola, this is the pulsating heart of the city. The beautiful, imposing 19th century building comprises more than 200 stalls selling the freshest mest, fish, bakery products, cheeses, eggs and other delicacies. There are also shops selling spices, grains, coffee and sweets. Even if you don't have to buy anything, it's worth a visit for the beauty of the architecture and for watching the hustle and bustle of the locals coming and going. There are a couple of small cafes inside, and recently stall n° 111 was converted in a nice street food spot with seating. For fresh fruit and vegetables instead, head outside to the open-air market in Piazza Cavallotti. Don't forget to try the infamous 5&5 (bread or focaccia stuffed with torta di ceci - just try it yourself) at nearby Gagarin's!

We run a cooking school in Lucca and initially struggled to find a good market with a wide range of product - then we discovered the Mercato Centrale in Livorno. We haven't gone anywhere else in over six years. The building is beautiful with a very high vaulted ceiling. The range of butchers, dairy products, fruit and vegetables, seafood and almost any other foodstuffs is excellent. All the stall holders are so friendly and helpful. Prices are very good and the quality is high. Unlike the Florence market which has become so touristy, we have never heard another native English speaker. This is where the Livornese shop.

This was our second visit, and both times we've been lucky and visited on the days when the indoor market expands to fill the surrounding streets (not sure how often this happens!).

The array of fruit and vegetables is amazing, and looks so appetizing. The fish too look fantastically fresh. And such variety available!

We enjoyed looking around, admiring all the choice. Shame we couldn't buy any as we were only visiting for the day from a cruise.

Mercato Centrale is similar to the “ Mercados” of South America. it contains a lot of different stands that sell food ( such as meat, bread, fish... ) and there’s also an open market behind it where you can find a lot of different stuff like clothes, necklaces, pots...
it’s very cheap and cool, everyone is kind and available for any information. highly recommended.

Meat, vegetables, fish and assorted sundries. Moderate prices. Higher than those in the street stands.
