- Ramaian VerneItaly2,577 contributionsLa Terrazza Mascagni is one of the most iconic and romantic places in Livorno. It is a huge square on the sea, characterized by a striking black and white checkered floor and a curvilinear balustrade that offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Originally built in the 1920s, it was later expanded in the 1930s and dedicated to the composer Pietro Mascagni, originally from Livorno. I recommend visiting it at sunset.Visited November 2024Traveled soloWritten November 4, 2024
- Albert R10 contributionsIt’s hard to explain the magic of this place. It feels as if we’ve stepped into a painting or an old English television show called 'The Prisoner.' A magical realm, where upon arrival, I was at a loss for what to behold first. We walked beside the sea, a scene straight out of a fairy tale. There was even a quaint antique carousel, with colorful horses and balloons floating by. Simply enchanting.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 14, 2024
- claudio dViterbo, Italy45,437 contributionsOn a ledge of the coast, about 500 meters south of the former Orlando shipyards (now Azimut-Benetti) or 1 km south of the port, once stood the Cavalleggeri fort complex which was dismantled in 1872; its area, in the 1920s, was transformed into an elegant lookout. The characteristic of this terrace is in its sinuous shape that follows the coastline, with a balustrade formed by over 4,000 concrete columns and the floor covered with more than 34,000 black and white tiles, thus giving a checkerboard effect. The area behind the belvedere, in the central and southern area is arranged in a garden with large empty spaces, covered with reddish brecciolino; in the southern part there is also a gazebo for music in neoclassical style that dates back to the early 1930s, although it was rebuilt after the last conflict; less beautiful is the northern part, kept on dirt roads and on which the aquarium buildings are located, with relative parking. In any case, the most beautiful part is the sinuous and long terrace that lends itself to walks, especially at sunset or in any case on warm days (not recommended in broad daylight during the summer, because all sunny), with a view of the sea that in the distance reaches the island of Gorgona.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 29, 2024
- mauraPontassieve, Italy56 contributionsBut what do we mean... Just look.... Many times I put myself there, but it's always positive thinking.... Wide air, spotless apart from some element that enjoys to make throw waste .. Then we love Livorno now we are Venice district, but we would like to move more centrally, but even if in 5 minutes you get everywhere... put yourself there is peace immerses you.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 18, 2025

Terrace overlooking the sea, built as if it were a balcony. The tiles, black and white, give a nice optical effect and the view is beautiful. It would deserve a higher grade, if it were not for the state of neglect and neglect in which it finds itself. Too bad!
However, it remains one of the most famous attractions in Livorno.

We have just spent THE most wonderful evening at …. we had just popped in for a drink after a meal but could not believe what a wonderful place we had arrived at. Instantly we felt this was something very special! I can very honestly say that this was an experience I will remember forever. To say that we were amongst some of the most brilliant, talented musicians is no word of an exaggeration. We were completely captivated and almost felt that we were intruding on something very special, something very intimate but something extraordinary!! I really cannot praise the musicians or the owners highly enough! It really felt like a Joules Holland experience. My husband and I both said that we would happily have paid for the entertainment but it was entirely free . We were met with the warmest welcome from the owner who just happens to be multitalented ( sings, plays saxophone and serves the most wonderful wine)and I certainly know where we will be spending every evening of our break….Bar La Terrazza Mascagni 🇮🇹🎶🎤

An absolutely gorgeous place to visit and take photos. Beautiful by day, evocative and romantic in the evening. A few meters away there is also the aquarium that you can visit as well as walking along the seafront full of clubs.

Square on the sea with a characteristic pavement design. Place to see only if you pass by otherwise it's not worth it. A place of no particular interest which is the setting for a walk by the sea but which does not offer any particular ideas. There are no refreshment points nearby so I advise against visiting during hot days.

Apart from the terrace itself, there is nothing else here..There is the aqua park, and an aquarium close by. But no stalls, no cafes, nothing. Nice to have a small wander around, and look over the coastline, but that is about it.

After returning from our morning trip to Pisa we decided to walk along the seafront of Livorno. At a very relaxed pace about an hour of strolling, with a few stops for photos, brought us to the Terrazza. There had obviously been a recent event as some staging still remained to be dismantled, but apart from a few others we pretty much had the place to ourselves. It was a nice break from the cruise ship routine. We stopped a while to admire the view, and took a number of photos and I can imagine the views at sunset are superb.

The black and white tile with the backdrop of the blue sea and white waves crashing is worth the trip alone. Other than that, the area is kind of empty and run down. I'd say give it about 30 min and get out of there.

We just happened upon this attraction when driving to the port and ended up spoening the day in the area. Plenty of free parking street side and within walking distance of some restaurants. It was a sunny week day so not too busy even though it appeared a couple of cruise ships were in port. Had lunch at a ristoranet nearby and walked the area. When returning we had to have a gelato before leaving the area. A fantastic day.

I lived in Livorno for three months in 2013. One of my favorite spots was the terrazza. On a warm Saturday morning, it was so wonderful to see the families outside with their kids roller skating or biking. My time spent there was mostly sitting and reading while absorbing the sun!
There is free wifi.
It connects to a trail that leads way down the coast to the south.
The view of the sea is absolutely incredible. There is also a small area to one side where I believe you can swim if the water is nice!

How far is Terrazzo Mascagni from Livorno cruise terminal, is it walkable.
Written April 5, 2018
It is walkable, and I recommend you do it, at least once you get to the Viale Italia onwards. Hop off the bus at the Cantiere Navale (Piazzale Orlando) and walk the rest of the way to the Terrazza, it's a really nice promenade.

How do I get from the port to center city, also, where is the Cathedral?
Written January 19, 2015
Hi Fitover50,
It's depend where do you came from. Generally you can choose a Shuttle or a Taxi to get the center city. It's not possible by foot. The Cathedral is in P.zza Grande.
I would suggest some small churches to visit that represent the soul of the multicultural city of Livorno. The Church of Our Lady in Via della Madonna is the church where all religious denominations in the city had an altar where to pray. E 'can still see the altar of the English of the French Armenian etc .... if you ask the pastor you can also see a kiosk medieval accessed from inside the church.
Another visit is worth the Church of St. Catherine in the square of the Dominicans in the Venice neighborhood.
If you can still advise you to refer to an experienced guide, and see a city with a unique history and wonderful.
