Picked up a free local map from the tourist info just along from the archaeological site entrance. There are 3 suggested walks and we went on the 2.5km walk to Monte Cesari. The walk takes you up through quiet lanes and then lovely pine trees where there are great views in front of an old quarry. From here you can either head back to the centre of Fiesole or walk down to gate C which is located 50m from a bus stop into Florence. We decided to walk back into Florence along quiet back roads which takes 1 to 1.5 hours depending how fast you walk.

We have been here often from Florence. Purchase bus tickets at the tobacconist in the Piazza at San Marco and walk down the street coming from the north, going away from the Academia, and wait for bus number 7 which leaves about every ten minutes. It is a short ride up to Fiesole, the views from the hiking trail, also number 7, marked by small red and white signs, are magnificent. On weekends there are often booths in the square near the bus stop where you can get a really good sandwich. Take your picnic on the trail and look over the vistas from where Leonardo dreamed of flight.
