About
Sbigoli Terrecotte is an old Florentine shop and pottery studio founded in 1857 by the Sbigoli family and specialized in making hand-painted ceramics both for the table and interior décor. The Chini-Adami family who took the place over in 1970 have a long standing tradition in the production of artistic ceramics. Lorenza Adami, Master Ceramist, is in charge of the artistic production of the studio; she is the daughter of Antonella Chini, ceramist, and niece of Tito Chini a well known painter and ceramist. At Sbigoli one can see “live work” and appreciate in person Lorenza’s creativity as well as her artistic and professional skills. Pottery in the making is always “on show” starting from the clay pots made on the wheel, to the glazing or dipping the red fired terracotta objects in a big basin filled with white glaze, to the hand painting of traditional designs. Sbigoli Terrecotte is located in the very heart of Florence, very close to the Duomo and is like an old Renaissance "bottega"

Florentia, as it was called by Latins, is permeated by an eternal beauty spread in all corners of the city. The historic center is characterized by the immensity of the Duomo, able to transport tourists into the brightest age of Florence: the Renaissance. Who does not know the Brunelleschi Dome, San Giovanni Baptistery and the Giotto’s Campanile? Everything is enclosed here and it would be easy to imagine the city as it was in ancient times, with maids walking in the main square and horses carrying coaches. Nowadays, roads are busy with street artists. Rustic Tuscan bakeries give way to fashion shops; just stop for a few minutes in the middle of Piazza della Repubblica to enjoy the colors and sweet melody of the carousel that will bring back great memories from anyone’s childhood.

Not sure all articles done by owner.
I got this plate as a gift. Lovely. Can I know the artist name?

Hallo, Thank you for your message. The photos your have shared refer to a plate about 30 years old - the logo in the back was our old logo for CdB - Ceramiche del Borgo (I think I can see the corner of our old business card too...). And the plate was made by my mum, Antonia Chini Adami. She is now 86 and doesn't work any more, but that pattern is one of our classical and is still painted by my sister Lorenza. It is called Uccellino di Montelupo and we do table sets withall accessories. Thanks again for sharing - it makes us very happy to see that our plates have been cherished for many years. Chiara

Real people doing work by hand
Oct 2019
We visited this shop with the help of a private guide, although you can find it yourself, it's not so far off the beaten track. These ceramics are hand painted and fired right there in the shop. This family has been doing the work for years. I love what I bought. Take the time to appreciate real artistry and know that the cost is appropriate. If you would like a private guide, our guide was Marco Verzi, marco@verszi.it. Money well spent on both the guide and the shop.

Highly Recommend
Sep 2019
My fiancé and myself stopped into this shop while strolling the streets of Florence - it caught our eye as a lovely little shop that makes hand-made terracotta, and it didn't disappoint. I bought a lovely wall decoration, and rather than carry it around Europe, I shipped it home myself through a local post office. Unfortunately, the piece was damaged during shipment, so I emailed the shop and asked if they could remake the piece and ship it themselves. They quickly responded and said they would be more than happy to do so. One week later, the piece was done being remade and shipped out. Less than a week after that, I had the piece, intact, at my home and am so happy.
I highly recommend this place for anyone looking for hand-made pieces!

Pottery close to exactly what we want
Sep 2019
Walking back to our rooms with gelato at night, we noticed original pottery and dishwater in the window of this store and revisited the next day. It is a bit off the tourist track. They have many interesting designs that just missed being exactly what we wanted. We bought two good pieces that are being shipped back and wished our tastes and theirs overlapped a bit more.

Thank you for your kind words. It has been a pleasure meeting you and hope that next time we can meet your taste closer. Not sure I told you at the time, but we can customize orders, change colours and patterns and work together to create your own pattern, even for a piece or two. Grazie, Chiara

So nice we went twice!
Sep 2018 • Couples
This is a lovely shop with some of the prettiest and fairly priced ceramics. The people are very helpful and friendly, too. It'd a big shop with a lot of variety and the artist is working away in her studio while her parents run the register. I saw so many things I wanted, especially the large della Robbia style pieces. When I go again to Florence (Which I will!) I will go there again.

The Most Unique & Beautiful Ceramics in Italy!
Sep 2017 • Couples
Two years ago, we stumbled upon Sbigoli Terrecotte while looking for a place to stop for lunch. The patterns and colors of the ceramics were the most unique and brilliant that I had seen on our entire trip. Many patterns and color schemes can be found duplicated in any ceramics shop in Italy. But the patterns and colors of Sbigoli Ceramics can only be found in this shop, making each piece a truly unique piece of art. I learned that all of the ceramics are made by a mother and daughter, who truly take pride in their work. As soon as I left the shop, I regretted not having ordered a set of dishes.

Last fall, we returned to Italy, making a one day stop in Florence on our way to Tuscany. This time, i was going to order a set of Sbigoli dishes. However, when I arrived at the shop, I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the different patterns and the brilliance of the colors. We also had to get to a train, so I decided to make my pattern selection and place an order when I returned home.

Upon returning to the States, I contacted Chiara via the Sbigoli website. I had finally selected a pattern! Chiara helped me chose a variety of different size/shape dishes to create complete place settings. After placing my order, Chiara explained the time frame needed to make/ship my order, and approximately when I could expect delivery. My beautiful dishes arrived just in time for Thanksgiving!

Words can’t express how beautiful these dishes are......I’ve received sooo many compliments about them. And.......they’re dishwasher safe! We’ve now traveled to North, Central and Southern Italy. I’ve been to numerous ceramics shops in every region we’ve visited. Sbigoli Terrecotte Ceramics is still my favorite shop! I highly recommend this lovely business to anyone in search of high quality, unique and beautiful Italian Ceramics!

Well Worth a Visit
Oct 2017 • Couples
My wife and I discovered this shop while cruising for a breakfast cafe near our hotel in Florence. The inventory is amazing (we spent close to an hour just admiring all their handiwork) and the owner and her Mom were very helpful and attentive to our needs. We purchased several pieces for ourselves and as gifts for friends. We bought ourselves a uniquely shaped fruit bowl with curled lipped edges, and the owner told us it was a new design that she put on display in the front window only a few hours earlier! Their craftsmanship is evident in all the pieces they produce and the prices are priced fairly. We will be ordering more pieces for holiday gift giving.

Thank you so much for your kind words. It is always a pleasure when your work is appreciated and particularly when you try a new shape and pattern! I had just taken the bowl out from the kiln and decided to show it in the window... it was still warm when I set it there. So I am doubly happy that it found home after a few hours. Grazie! Chiara

Amazing handmade Florentine pottery
Apr 2017 • Couples
Please go if you are in town. I am always in search of something special and local to take back with me from my trips and this store made my vacation. They have amazing hand made pottery and even take care to replicate ancient designs from books they study of pieces excavated from around the local area. Everything is very reasonably priced, but know everything is hand made, the more intricate, the more expensive. They ship to the US for basically the same as your VAR tax would be so stop and and get wonderful souvenirs for the whole family.

A treasure!
Nov 2016 • Friends
This gorgeous ceramic shop has become my favorite stop in Florence. The hand painted ceramics are simply beautiful and the quality and attention to detail is evident in everything this hardworking family produces. After I came back to the us I kept dreaming of pieces I left behind and Chiara was amazing in putting together a very complicated order and figuring out economical shipping that arrived perfectly and exactly on time.

Thank you! It was a pleasure working together to create your order of Christmas glfts for you and your friends. Sometimes it may look a long process, but everything is handpainted and often customized or made "just for you"... And we feel very happy to have helped in creating good memories of Florence and Florentine works. Hope 2017 will bring you in Italy again. Chiara
