The area
Neighborhood: Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.

If You’re in the Area...
Feb 2020 • Solo
Small ‘plaza’ where several streets with vehicular traffic converge. There is a tall stone column in the center. A church with the same name as the plaza is worth a short visit. The Ferragamo Museum is off to one side of the square and an old palazzo faces the square.

Small city square
Jul 2019 • Couples
Piazza Santa Trinita should not be regarded as a piazza as there were continuous traffic flows around the area. There were several old structures and a huge Column of Justice on the spot that made it famous. You would pass through this area after visiting the Arno River.

Christmas lights made this a 4 of 5 -Dec. 28
Dec 2018 • Family
We took this way back to our hotel on Piazza Santa Maria Novella from the river and found a great Christmas light display up and down the street.

There were shops and resturants along the streets in both directions.

Less foot traffic
Oct 2018 • Solo
There was less foot traffic in this small square compared with
other more famous squares in the historic section of Florence.
The Column of Justice dominates the site.

In the evenings, buskers perform at the base of the column. Some of them are worth stopping for, but one particular young male singer was just plain awful one evening. I guess no one vets them.

I stayed for ages
Jun 2018 • Solo
This is a hive of activity at night, musicians performing for donations enthral the crowds sitting on the steps of the surrounding buildings which echo the sound magnificently.

Small, likely to pass thru, beware of panhandlers
Apr 2018 • Couples
Nice through way to shopping and other more well known areas. Beware of several scammers in the area, who first ask you what time it is then try and give you a gift, insisting they do not want anything...right! Next comes the photos of the babinos or children, now the ask for money. Not saying this is the only place we saw them, just a warning. Firm no’s and walking away do the trick.

Little "square"
May 2017 • Couples
Piazza Santa Trinita is not square as such, but it's a public square. You can't sit down for a rest or anything like that, as it's more of a thoroughfare for traffic rather than pedestrians. In the middle, or sort of in the middle, is a column, with a sculpture on top, which is meant to be that of "Justice", dating from ancient Roman times.

Small but nice piazza
Jan 2017 • Couples
This piazza is quite small but it is surrounded by historic buildings, mainly palazzos from the 14th and 15th centuries. In the middle of the square is a column known as the justice column which was transported from Rome in the 16th century. You can pass through this piazza on the way to the Ponte Vecchio.
