There is only one group allowed to run boats on the Arno and that is the Renaioli. It does not matter which tour group you pick or if you book them on-line yourself, it will be the same. What we did was buy out the boat. So we had two persons rather 14 to 15, we brought a bottle of wine and some break and had a nice romantic trip up and down the river. The history is very nice and you will see things from the river that you cannot see from the streets or the bridges. yes it is typical boating on a river, but still it was nice, fun, and romantic.

The traditional type of boat (Renaioli) is basic (its a large punt) and the company, despite professional emails from an english speaking girl, was still 'italian' in that they didnt answer my calls on the actual day, and her number was being forwarded to another mobile (the italian 'driver'), who supposedly didn't speak English (or answer). So as we stood in the heat in front of a gate to the river bank (at Piazza Mentana), I really didn't know if they would actually turn up. If I had paid any money in advance, at that point I would have decided it was all a hoax... But turn up he did, and we had a glorious time going along the river. It was hard work for Paulo (we were 10 including 4 kids in the boat) and there wasn't a life vest in sight, but it was definitely a highlight of our day in Florence.
