About Chris Dobson Art History Tours
We organize custom private tours in Italy for small groups, immersing you in the local art, history and culture, particularly in Florence and Tuscany. Chris Dobson is a professional art historian with over 30 years’ experience, but more than that, he is also an artist with personal working experience of how artworks were actually created, and he uses this unique blend of skills to explain the techniques used by the great artists. Chris enjoys sharing his passion for Italy as a rich mixture of art, culture and gastronomy. He speaks Italian fluently. The tours are given in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, and designed to make art and history engaging and exciting for all, without in any way ‘dumbing-down’ the subject. We regret that due to the bespoke nature of our tours we are unable to organize them at very short notice: you will need to confirm your booking at least one month in advance of your tour. For more details please visit our website.

We did a private historical waking tour with Chris Dobson, who is one of the most well read and respected art historians I have ever met. My wife and I opted to do a private tour instead of one of the group tours. We learned so much about the families, the battles, the art, and the food that has made Florence the amazing city that it is, and I wouldn't have known any of it without Chris's incredible attention to detail and knowledge. I would not hesitate to recommend this company for a private or group tour, and look forward to returning one day to do another of their tours.

Great experience! Italy really is the country of art and poetry, and not just the famous cities! Hidden away in the Piedmont countryside we found some real medieval treasures. To guide us we had our very own ‘troubador’ Chris Dobson. He showed us the palaces and the incredible cathedral of Saluzzo and then we went to the castle of la Manta, full of elegant paintings of knights and ladies, a complete surprise! Chris was very knowledgeable about the story behind the paintings AND he made it really easy to understand. Thank goodness this bit of Italy is still unknown to mass tourism! Thanks Chris!

Mr.Dobson has an encyclopedic knowledge of historical Florence,as well as its art and architecture. He imparts this knowledge in a very friendly way and will give you as much or as little detail as you want. He can point out things that you might miss going round on your own. He was also able to arrange a trip to Sienna to see the Palio horse race, something I have wanted to do for years. I had a good view from the balcony of a private apartment. Well worth the expence.
