Florentia, as it was called by Latins, is permeated by an eternal beauty spread in all corners of the city. The historic center is characterized by the immensity of the Duomo, able to transport tourists into the brightest age of Florence: the Renaissance. Who does not know the Brunelleschi Dome, San Giovanni Baptistery and the Giotto’s Campanile? Everything is enclosed here and it would be easy to imagine the city as it was in ancient times, with maids walking in the main square and horses carrying coaches. Nowadays, roads are busy with street artists. Rustic Tuscan bakeries give way to fashion shops; just stop for a few minutes in the middle of Piazza della Repubblica to enjoy the colors and sweet melody of the carousel that will bring back great memories from anyone’s childhood.

Lodged next to The Baptistry and The Duomo, many overlook the splendid loggia. The smallest museum in Florence has a treasure, the first image of the city by Bernardo Daddi. It is mainly a tourist center but a docent will guide you through the two rooms at specific times (10,12, and 3:00 PM while I was there).

You can see a video of this museum on my YouTube Channel: Art and Travel by Dave.

We bought a 72 hour ticket that allowed us to visit many of the attractions in Florence, and the Bigallo was one. It has so many interesting things to see, you really need to put aside at least two hours for your visit. Well recommended!

We lucked out and stumbled upon this beautiful museum the only Monday of the month it was open. In March, it was nearly empty, so we wandered at our leisure. The building itself is worth taking a closer look at, as it is equally as lovely as many of the sculptures. We found unique and interesting sculptures, carvings and frescoes from masters and unknowns alike.

This so-called museum is open most days at noon and again at 3:00 PM for ten minutes each time, oddest museum hours ever. But there are really only two tiny rooms and the collection consists of an altarpiece a fresco and several other paintings (including one of 14th century Glorence when the Duomo was only partially constructed. If you happen to pass by at noon or 3:00 I guess it is worth your while as admission is free.

The Loggia del Bigallo is a late Gothic building in Florence that stands at the corner of Piazza San Giovanni and via Calzaioli. The site near the Baptistry of Florence was donated by a benefactor. Lodged next to The Baptistry and The Duomo, many overlook this impressive loggia.

A lesser known attraction at Piazza del Duomo is Loggia del Bigallo, situated at the corner of Piazza San Giovanni and Via Calzaioli, facing the Duomo and the other famous attractions that can been seen and visited here.

Loggia del Bigallo was built in the middle of the 14th century. It served as a shelter for orphans, runaways and abandoned infants, who were cared for by the building occupants, the Compagnia della Misericordia (Company of Mercy).

The loggia features bas reliefs and other decorative features and the building facade offers three niches with bust statues. It is also lightly frescoed throughout, making it an attractive building to look at.

Within the loggia you can enter the museum (5€) where you can find a few rooms displaying some fine 14th century frescos and other artefacts, mostly belonging to Campagnia della Misericordia. Opening hours are 10-2pm and 3-6.50pm daily but closed on Tuesdays (as of March 2015).

Overall, Loggia del Bigallo and the museum make a nice place to spend half an hour but probably best considered after you seen the main attractions. If you have an extra day or two in Florence or are making return visits to the city and are in search of less frequented places to see around the city, this is a place potentially worth stopping for.

The Gothic structure was built by the charitable organization called “Company of Mercy” in the 14th century to serve as a shelter for unwanted and lost children. The other charity organization, “Company of Bigallo” were focusing on the housing of pilgrims and travelers and inside the building there is a museum that contains the artefacts and objects related to them.
