The current building was built on the site of the "monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli", built around 1450 for the "Our White Sisters" who later became cloistered nuns. Saint Maria Maddalena De'Pazzi lived and died here. It preserves the beautiful fresco of the Crucifixion by Perugino. In 1628 the nuns exchanged the building with the Cistercian monks and the Church took the name of Cestello Nuovo. In 1793 the church was transformed into a parish and the monastery suppressed and in 1798 it took its current name.

This is a lovely church in the Oltrarno neighborhood. We happened upon it by chance after first viewing it from across the river. Inside we found beautiful artwork, a small garden, and a silent, reverent atmosphere. This is a true neighborhood church, existing as it has for centuries.

It is well worth a walk down to this part of town as it is bereft of tourists which makes a nice change. We liked this church for its simplicity and that it looked like it’s primary purpose is for worship rather than tourism.

This stunning church brings a peace as you enter. It is located on the South side of the Arno. It is a must visit and little known. It was a cloudy day and the feeling in the church was warm and inviting. There were fresh sunflowers on the alter which had beautiful carvings behind it.

Magnificent view of the imposing dome and bell tower from the Piazza di Ognissanti! Especially on a rainy day, when this austere Baroque church blends with gray color of the sky, heavy clouds and mirky waters of the Arno creating one more unforgettable view of Florence.

This is a beautiful church on the south side of the Arno in Florence. It is a very beautiful building and is best seen from across the river. Probably one of the most recognisable landmarks from that side of the river.

The San Frediano in Cestello church is a beautiful church in Oltrarno. Especially pretty at night, it is lovely when seen from across the river. It is also home to some really good works of art. Nice

Very pretty church in Oltrarno. The Borgo San Frediano is the road running near the church & it's a great stroll in the evening. Church is especially beautiful at night.

Went during Twilight hours. Best part was the proximity to the little beach along the river. Great place to get some quiet time, since most tourists have left by 4PM

San Frediano in Cestello is a nice church along the Lungarno Soderini.
I think the most attractive thing is the exterior, with a nice architecture.
The interior was a bit of a letdown because for the most part it seems like the church has been heavily renovated, but inside there are some nice paintings and frescoes.
It's not a "can't miss" church, but it coild be a mice stop between a visit to the more famous Ognissanti and Santa Maria del Carmine.
