Don't get me wrong, it's interesting to see but I wouldn't recommend putting this on my "must see in Florence" list. We walked through twice on our way but there's better things to visit here.

During my month in Firenze I walked through these gates at least twice a day. There is a Spar grocery store nearby with a good selection of food and quite an inpresive selection of wine. There are many shoe repair shops nearby. The bus stand just inside the gates will get you most anywhere you'd like to go but it is worth some time just to examine these old gates. The round about outside the gates has a very interesting work of art in the centre. There is a vegetable stand near the park that is worth checking out. This is a great little neighbourhood. The Florence Academy of Art studio is nearby and plenty of great restaurants including the Terraza di Principi. Of course this is also one of the key settings in Dan Brown's "Inferno."

We happened upon this porta by accident. We took a wrong turn while walking to a friends place.
I was surprised to see an impressive modern sculpture on the roundabout next to the ancient portal. (see my photos)
It´s good to see the new art emerging side by side with the old.
The porta itself is impressive but similar to the others, so if you are not interesting in modern art and time is restricted, then maybe you could give it a miss as it´s a bit out of the way.

The Porta Romana is one of the outings offered when you visit the Boboli Gardens. In fact, there is, just in front of it, a huge statue attributed to Michelangelo Pistoletto. This statue is in the middle of a roundabout. When you enter through Porta Romana, you take the streets from the South towards the city center. The area is very nice, not very touristy, there are many Airbnbs and local cafes

Beautiful entrance to the Pitti area.
Old streets lie behind it which will take you to the palace and on to town in a 10 minute walk.
Would not be on my must do list but as it's close to our hotel we go that way in to town

The gate into Florence from a road that leads into Rome. Interesting for its historical significance and hard to miss, otherwise, not very memorable.

We walked through this gate every day on our walk in to Florence. There is a small fresh market outside the gate that sells beautiful produce. The doors are huge! Be sure to include a person in your pictures of it for scale. Feel free to touch the doors and think about who and what may have entered through this passage. This is a small part of the old city walls that still stands. From this entrance to Florence center, there are many shops and places to eat that are not crammed with tourists. We opted to rent a flat just outside the city walls and got to live like locals for our time there.

This old Roman gate is at the southern entrance to Boboli Gardens. It is quite a busy roundabout. There are bus connections here that can quickly take you towards the old town or Michelangelo Plaza.

This gate is part of the wall of Florence. There is a lot of traffic right in front of the gate, so taking a picture without a car on it might be challenging. The doors are still there. This gate is also mention in the Dan Brown's Inforno novel

We visited Florence for 4 days and stayed at the Greenhouse on Via Metastasio 41, which is just around the corner from Porta Romana. We passed through this arch every day on our way to and from the town centre. The Statue of the lady with the Body on her head is very intriguing.
