Old building on which the current Duomo was built the discovery of this church called by someone "crypt" (who knows why) is quite recent.
It should be seen to understand more about the area and ancestral architecture, but everything is left to chance and inside you have to figure it all out yourself.
However interesting visit, although quite "fast" as experience...

It is very illuminating to see the remains on the earlier cathedral of Santa Reparata under the west end of the present cathedral. When the duomo was undergoing restoration in the 1970s, which involved taking up the pavement of the nave, new ruins of the original church of Santa Reparata were discovered. These were preserved and made accessible to the public in 1974. This church was built in the 6th century and contains some of the original brickwork and mosaic flooring. The building was extended in the Romanesque period and includes a mosaic laid by a North African craftsman, a peacock - impressive! An original statue of St Reparata is in the Museo. When the decision was made to build the dramatic new cathedral over it in the 14th century, this earlier one was dismantled but some of its stonework was re-used.

Nice visit if you’ve bought a Brunelleschi pass, but wouldn’t recommend buying a ticket just to see this. Trip only took us 5 minutes. Way too crowded and not that much to see unless you’re super into archeology.

You must be passionate about archaeology
A great opportunity to enter the cathedral without waiting too long!
The cathedral has little interest inside....go see santa maria novelle
On the other hand, from the outside a real jewel.

The Crypt of Santa Reparata is a rather nice surprise when you visit the Duomo. Your Duomo ticket entitles you to entry here too, but you still have to queue up for a bit. Waiting is not too long but it's part of the excitement! It's an archaeological treasure and you can see the history of the Cathedral as well as part of the city itself. The mosaics are very good as are all the other objects and the information provided, although not too detailed is just right. The area is well maintained. This is really worth visiting.

This crypt is inside the main Cathedral and one not to be missed. If you have the combined ticket of the Duomo this entry is included.
Tickets: Best bought online from the original website ilgrandemuseodelduomo. No additional charges and payment is secure. The cost of the combined ticket is 18 euros which lets you enter all attractions at the piazza including climbing the Duomo, the cathedral, the crypt, the baptistery, the bell tower and the museum. The ticket is valid for three days which means you can space out your visit and not be in a hurry to finish everything in one day.
Entry: Entry to the crypt is inside the Cathedral. Print out your online tickets and show it at the check point. The Cathedral is located of course in the most famous square in the city the piazza del duomo and is about fifteen minutes walk from the train station. The cathedral entry is located on the left front gate, not the side gate. Thats for climbing the Duomo. There are a lot of volunteers at the piazza. Feel free to ask them for the line. Last thing you want is to stand in the wrong queue.
Pro Tip: If you want to climb the Duomo (separate entry) try to get the earliest slot and immediately after queue up for the cathedral entry. This will have the longest queue and as the day goes by the wait time keeps going up. If not climbing the Duomo then your first entry of the day should be here. It opens at 9 AM. Go as close to this time as possible to avoid long waits.
The crypt is quite well maintained and illuminated. Its a short visit but adds wonders to the marvels of the Cathedral. Needless to say people suffering from claustrophobia should avoid this. With a combined ticket since this is included and you are entering the cathedral as that's a must see, its a no brainer that the crypt deserves a visit.

The ticket for the dome, museum and bell tower includes access to this crypt underneath the Cathedral.
Its not as bad as it sounds, it's a well displayed and setup ability to wander around under the Cathedral. Only note, if you are over 6', you will need to watch your head a number of times. The raised floors and walkways setup are often with little headroom.

The ruins of this church are located under the Duomo. Many people walk down the steps not realizing they have to purchase a ticket to enter the ruins, which creates a huge bottle neck.
The ruins are well marked with signs in English and it is worth a walk to see these ancient ruins which exist beneath the current cathedral.

The crypt is automatically included in the combined Duomo ticket so entry is free once you have this. With so much to see and do in Florence, you could easily dismiss the crypt as just an add-on but it's worth seeing. If you are already going indie the Duomo then don't miss the crypt. It won’t take you long because it’s not big and it’s well organised, with clear pathways leading you through the crypt. Kids will also probably find it interesting to descend below the Duomo into the ‘secret’ part below.
The crypt was a fabulous little window into history and you really got a sense of the many layers of history in Florence. It mainly contains the excavated ruins of Santa Reparata (the original cathedral of Florence) and the original Roman stone walls and floors. It’s a little dark and musky, and maybe even a bit eerie, but the displays are lit up and there are good, clear information boards along the way.
Other points of interest are the ancient geometric mosaic floors, some skull and bone relics (strange but weirdly compelling), and several tombs of bishops and noblemen. I particularly liked the large and intricate peacock mosaic. The peacock, a symbol of resurrection, was probably designed by North African craftsmen in the 5th century. Look out also for Giovanni de’ Medici’s tomb. He died in 1352 and was buried with his sword and golden spurs. Don’t miss a quick stop at Brunelleschi’s tomb. We somehow missed it which was kind of disappointing but I didn't know to look out for it.
BUYING A TICKET
The crypt is included in the single Il Grande Museo Del Duomo ticket so you can’t buy a ticket separately. However the combo ticket also includes the baptistery, bell tower, museum and dome-climb. At €18 I thought it was very good value. The ticket is also quite flexible and allows you to spread your sight-seeing over 3 days. If you are booking online there is a €2 online booking fee. My main tip is to make sure you buy directly from the official website for the best price – there are no extra charges or fees.

In the crypt of the Duomo is an amazing almost unpublicised museum. The remains have been exposed of the previous Basilica de Santa Reparata which was demolished to make way for the Duomo which had just been started. There are remains dating back to the ancient Roman period including a remarkable mosaic floor which would have once covered the entire basilica. As well as several centuries of ruins you also get a great insight into the ancient history of Florence. There are various important graves including that of the Duomo's dome architect Filippo Brunelleschi it is also possible there may be two Popes buried in the crypt. There is an extra charge once you've entered the Duomo but it is definitely worth it for anyone with even a passing interest in history.
