We were unable to enter as a political convention was taking place but its a nice half hour walk to stroll around the old walls of the fortress through the park and take in the size of this old fort

Certainly an impressive 16th century fortress/cittadel with massive turrets/bastions. Worth venturing off the beaten track to view.

We walked up from the train station hoping to explore within. Unfortunately there was a conference running and the entire venue was closed to the public.

Maybe next time.

This impressive fortress/cittadel built by San Gallo in the early 16th century for the Medicis is encased in the 14th century city walls just outside today's historical center, a brief walk from the train station. A massive construction of turrets, bastions and military barracks, it never underwent a siege. Today it is Florence's principal venue for trade fairs, among which the yearly international handcraft fair in April (Mostra dell'Artigianato) and many more. It doesn't usually figure on the tourist itinerary, though anyone interested in military architecture is sure to find it of great interest.

Since our hotel was a few blocks from this impressive structure, we strolled over to see what it was. NIce, old, fort from the outside. No admission fee. Everything was quaint shops, areas to sit and relax, and exhibition displays, some very interesting, such as a convention might be. As we got further into the building, we came upon a full-blown Octoberfest going on. Acres of food courts and food to sample or purchase. There were grills and BBQ's going as well as outdoor picnic tables and full meals to purchase. We had to try everything and we had a blast! I am never going to eat again! I was so 'overfed.' The prices were all very reasonable. The choices were overwhelming. It was nice to see some had their dog with them. I'm glad other countries are not so uptight about this as the US is.

Florence's Fortezza da Basso is an exhibition center. All major trade fairs are held here in Florence. At out time there are a tattoo exhibition/ fair taking place.

On the outside, the place was green full of trees and had an amazing water fountain with a pond in the middle … where you could see the birds swimming. Admission is free, relax and sit on one of the benches and let it sink in.

I attended a European conference at the Fortezza during a very hot July weekend. The aircon worked well, thank goodness, and there was plenty of space for the 1,000 attendees.
Catering was abysmal - no options for celiac sufferers or vegetarians - this is probably the organizers fault more than the caterers.

Walked here from the centre, across a busy dual carriageway, to find its not open to the public. Unless they have some exhibition on or similar.
Wasnt worth the walk really as the busy road spoils any appreciation!

After seeing this on the map I thought it would be interesting to visit this walled fortress but the most interesting thing was walking around the enormous walls as you can’t go in unless you are seeing an exhibition or attending a conference. It’s not a must see, spend your time seeing something you can go into.

Dodged the many local roadworks on a very hot day to get to this location only to be told it is not open to the public! Apparently it is used as a convention/trade fair centre by business and not an historical attraction - should have done my homework first.
