We were lucky enough to be visiting Florence on the 24th June the day they celebrate the Feast day of St John the Baptist there Patron Saint. Various events and celebrations take place during the day we went to the Piazza Santo Novelli just before 4.00pm to see the beginning of parade through the town, it was amazing men of all ages dressed in colourful middle age costumes and armour, weaponry, drummers flag bearers our timing was perfect they then commenced the parade and we watched them all pass us to wind there way through the town visiting all the major piazzas on there way to Piazza Croce where the final of famous ancient football match would be played at 5.00pm. Fantastic spectacle
the drumming, flag throwing and colours are really exciting really pleased we saw it.
We made sure we ate in restaurant near the river then found a lively bar near one of the
the bridges spannng the Arno to witness the finale of celebrations a spectacular fireworks display set from Piazza Michaelangelo every bridge and right along the river banks were lined with the crowds all eager to see them a perfect end to the celebrations which were enjoyed by everyone local and tourists.

I was lucky that I arrived in Florence on 24th June. There is a unique feel about the city on this day. I arrived in the evening so could only watch the fireworks. The crowd was insane on the bridges and the bank of the river. You must go early to grab a good spot to watch the fireworks. I think Ponte Santa Trinita is the best place to watch the fireworks.

Just wondering about the safety around the events especially the Storica Football ? match. I am taking my family of 8 with teens and will be there during the festivities. My wife and I have been to Florence twice and overall Italy 7 times so we know the basics of pick pockets and purse snatchers, but wondered if there is any additional issue surrounding the Historical football match and festivities?
