Neighborhood: Duomo
Florentia, as it was called by Latins, is permeated by an eternal beauty spread in all corners of the city. The historic center is characterized by the immensity of the Duomo, able to transport tourists into the brightest age of Florence: the Renaissance. Who does not know the Brunelleschi Dome, San Giovanni Baptistery and the Giotto’s Campanile? Everything is enclosed here and it would be easy to imagine the city as it was in ancient times, with maids walking in the main square and horses carrying coaches. Nowadays, roads are busy with street artists. Rustic Tuscan bakeries give way to fashion shops; just stop for a few minutes in the middle of Piazza della Repubblica to enjoy the colors and sweet melody of the carousel that will bring back great memories from anyone’s childhood.

- Cheryl63Clifton Royal, Canada51 contributionsDuomo cup polo climbWe purchased tickets on line prior to our trip for 8:15am entry. Great to be early and beat the crowds. The climb was fine. At times very tight circles and at the end very steep. I found going down more of a challenge. The view from the top was stunning on a beautiful sunny morning. I don’t like heights but felt safe at the top as it was all wired in. Do the climb.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 11, 2023
- Hany GBakersfield, California1,889 contributionsSuperb view!We climbed the cupola with a tour guide. It is not an easy mission to climb it. It is more than 400 steps. The stairs are narrow and swirling. If you are claustrophobic or have limited physical fitness, this is not for you. The view from the top is breathtaking.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 24, 2024
- BradHong Kong, China175,773 contributionsPerhaps the most easily recognisable dome in the worldBrunelleschi's Dome is situated upon Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo) in the historic city centre of Florence. This is an important landmark structure and probably one of the most easily recognisable church domes in the world. It is constructed between 1418-34, stands 54 metres in height and is 45.5 metres in diameter. You can see it very clearly from various elevated positions around the city as well as from the side of the basilica and at ground level when wandering around Piazza dell Duomo and Piazza San Giovanni. You can experience viewing the remarkable inner cupola of Brunelleschi's Dome from within Duomo, where you can stand under the dome and see the impressive frescos by Vasari and Zuccari (1572-1579) referring to the theme of the Last Judgement. Picture taking is a bit challenging given the height of the dome and its frescos. To see the frescos better, you may want to purchase one of the ticket passes that include entry and the 463 step climb to the top of the dome. As you near the top, you have up close views of the inner cupola frescos before being rewarded with spectacular views of the city centre from outside the dome.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 13, 2024
- ChloeBristol, United Kingdom17 contributionsFlorence CathedralWe queued for around 45 mins to get in to the church for free. It was well worth it! There are side entrances with much shorter queues for those that have paid for to climb the dome or bell tower so make sure you get into the right one!Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 17, 2024

However I think the building is better on the outside than the inside as it quite plain and there is restoration work taking place. I bought a combined ticket for the Duomo, which included the Cupola which is the only timed ticket. The remaining places to visit which include the Bell Tower, Baptistry, Crypt and interior of the Duomo and the Museum Dell' Opera can be visited at anytime within three days. I recommend that you choose the earliest timed ticket for the Cupola as it gets very busy and your entry is timed. Please read the small print and do not have any back packs as you will not be allowed entry and asked to store the back pack in another building. When visiting the Doom also no back packs and observe the dress codes for covering the shoulders and knees. I saw so many people turned away for this despite having queued for more than an hour, so be warned!!! There is no lift to the outside of the dome and it's 460 steps up and the same amount down. You can see the dome interior on the ascent but there are perspex screens that discourage from taking pictures down into the cathedral. Once at the top, you have the best views of Florence. I was the first person to the top so took wide angle shots then switched lenses for zoom images. By the time I had finished, the crowds began to increase, so I made my way back down to street level.Visited August 2024Traveled soloWritten September 8, 2024

Let’s start with the cupola itself. It’s beautiful and the views are amazing. The climb is doable for any fit person. Sadly the organization selling the tickets, guiding the people etc. Are 90% grumpy people that treat tourists with disdain. Tickets used to be €20 for all Duomo attractions, now you can only buy separate tickets for each. Just climbing up and down the cupola will already set you back €20, then you still need tickets for the bell tower, the museum, and the baptisterium. There are better ways to spend your money in Florence. But the cathedral itself is beautiful!!

Super beautiful and unique Cupola, which is the dome for Duomo. On the day I was there I tried to enter the dome but was disappointed to learn not even pay on entry was entertained. You must book in advance to be able to access the dome. My only other alternative was to admire its beauty from the outside. I would have preferred to get the view from its tower because I heard its spectacular.
So for those wanting to visit and enter please make your reservation in advance, otherwise you would not be able to enter.

The dome is HUGE!!
We prebooked our tickets to climb the dome - the climb is difficult and also claustrophobic at spots.
The views are really ok - i think this climb is hyped and can be skipped.
Rather climb the Pallazo Vecchio Tower - much better views of the Duomo itself and of Florence

Climbing the iconic Duomo is something not to be missed. You get to see the amazing "last judgement" ceiling painting at close quarters on the way up (and even closer on the way down) and the view at the top...well the photos don't do it justice!
Be aware it is not for everyone. If you have difficulty with stairs, hate heights or suffer from claustrophobia you may want to pass on it.

I would recommend booking a ticket for going up the Cupola a few days in advance as it does sell out. The only pass that includes the Cupola on duomo.firenze.it is the Brunelleschi Pass. The time slots are every 45 minutes (for 125 individuals) and you need to enter on the Porta della Mandorla (Almond Door). This is not very clear on the ticket.
The 463 steps are actually not that bad and broken up by a stop on top of the Cupola on the inside before continuing to the top. There are just some very tight spots and very steep staircases.
This all pays off with the view from the top. It is just amazing. You get around 15 minutes up there before you are reminded to start your descent as the next group is getting ready to go up.

Here is yet another thing to see and do in the Duomo Plaza. The cupola is part of the cathedral and you can climb up into it for a great view. What I like about this is being able to observe the brick construction of the dome which was quite an accomplishment at the time.

I paid for for this climb as part of the Santa Maria online ticket (don't bother with any of the TA 'deals', just buy straight from the cathedral website). I didn't have the time to look at any of the other things included in the package - this was deservedly my priority. As you come down from the climb you get to have a sneaky peak of the cathedral from behind a railing but you don't get automatic access as you pass through on your way out. You have to exit, queue up again and re-enter. Although the climb tickets are timed, it's a very large group that goes up at any one time so there is A LOT of queueing and waiting, both to enter and at various stages on the way up, particular as the passageways become narrower, steeper and more uneven as you ascend.
Apart from the magnificence of the dome itself, this is the iconic feature that stands out in any view of Florence, and from its top you have another amazing 360 view from the centre of the city, stretching out to its surroundings.

An experience not to be missed if you don't mind a climb of over 400 stairs. There are plenty of stages along the way where it's possible (and advisable) to take a rest. About halfway up the route passes around the inside wall of the base of the dome, so you can see the spectacular artwork from close up - normally it's way above your head when you're in the busy main cathedral area below.
At a few points on the climb there are explanatory panels dealing with the dome and its construction.
The view from the top - excellent. You can see for miles around in all directions.
The number of people allowed up at one time is strictly limited, which makes the experience even more enjoyable. It also means that it's essential to book a specific date and time well in advance.
Please note that this is not an activity for those who have claustrophobia.

Great experience, climbed the dome (around 437 steps), narrow in places but it's not as bad as you think. The views of Florence from the top make it worthwhile, also you get a good look at the artwork inside the dome. I had booked combination tickets before we flew and had pre booked a time slot for the climb ( best to go early in the morning) and then you could use your ticket for up to 72 hours after but can only visit each attraction once.

Is this still included in the Firenze Card? I read that people used their Firenze Card to visit the Cupola but I can't find anything about it on the Firenze Card website.

Ciao a tutti.

The easiest way to book the ticket is online. If you book online, make sure to use the official site because if you buy it through a third party site, you will pay extra, for no extra benefit.
You cannot buy a ticket for just the Cupola. You have to buy a combination ticket which includes entry to the Baptistery, the Duomo Museum, the Clock Tower and the crypt (entry to the basilica is free but the lines can be very long). The ticket remains valid for 3 days.
The other important thing to know is that you will need to also book an entry time to the Cupola. At the same time that you buy your ticket, you can choose your time slot for the cupola. One of the advantages of biking online is that you can book early and have more time slots to choose from.

Buongiorno,

Buon viaggio!

Hi - We are going to Florence in October. We purchased the Firenze Card and I am reading that we need a free reservation to book a time slot for the Cupola climb... I see on your review you can do this in florence - but I'm worried there won't be any spots left!! On the website, it appear they're already running out. (And I don't want to purchase tickets when we have the museum pass). Do you think we will have an issue ?
Just trying to figure out best way to handle :)
Also - did you do the crypt too?
Thank you!!

We booked it directly in Florence. As it was January, we had no problem to have it on the same day we reserved it.

Hola !!!
Gracias
Written June 13, 2019
From the first scan of your ticket (first entry) it is valid for 72 hours (exactly !!)
There is no time restriction for the single entries (cupola, museum,...), nobody checks thats.
For the cupola you should calculate 45 min., the campanile appr. 30 (Not so worth, you are completely caged there).
There biggest problem is to enter the cathedral, it can take 1- 2 hours (!!) to get into due to security checks. Bur you get some internal views while visiting the cupola. We skipped the visit of the cathedral and the crypt.
