Between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries, not only in Florence, but in many Italian and European cities, fights broke out between the Guelph faction and the Ghibelline faction.
After various events, the Guelphs won in Florence, although they did not have their own palace.
Not far from Piazza della Signoria, there were numerous houses owned by Ghibelline families, which were demolished; therefore this Palagio (or Palace) arose in their place.
The first, the original one, was destroyed in a fire, a few years later another was built based on a design by Filippo Brunelleschi.
In the following years there were interventions by various artists, including Giorgio Vasari.
History gives us alternating events, with periods in which it had great importance followed by others of decline.
Today it is remembered above all for being the headquarters of Calcio Storico (this is why it is also called "Palazzo dei Capitani"; it is currently used for exhibitions and conferences.
From an artistic and architectural point of view it is not present, but it has a history that makes it very interesting for visits.
