Neighborhood: Florence Historic Center
The Florence Historic Center neighborhood is a living, breathing canvas of Renaissance art and architecture. It is home to the iconic Duomo and Michelangelo’s David, and the streets echo with the artistic genius of the masters. The neighborhood is abundant with traditional Tuscan cuisine, with trattorias serving up dishes like ribollita and bistecca alla Fiorentina. The neighborhood is also well-connected with convenient access to the main train station, Santa Maria Novella. Visitors can spend their days exploring the Uffizi Galleries, strolling along the Arno River, or unwinding in the lush Boboli Gardens.

This is a fairly large public square in the Historic Centre of Florence that has been around since the Middle Ages. It takes present name the major basilica situated at the the north end. It is also due south of the Santa Maria Novella Rail Station which many will use to arrive into the city. Thus, it is very likely that you will pass by Piazza di Santa Maria Novella either while sightseeing or around arrival/departure time by rail. Piazza di Santa Maria Novella is a mostly rectangular shaped. It is a pedestrian only area these days and lined with cafes & bars with alfresco seating as well as a handful of hotels. You will findnice views of the Basilica facade to the north from many locations within the square. To the south is Museo Novecento and note the fun pair of Turtle obelisks situated on opposite sides. These are worth a look-see when passing by.

Piazza Santa Maria Novella, fortunately, is separated from the station square by the church of the same name. If this had not happened, she would have lost all her attractiveness. The dominant feature of the square is the facade of Santa Maria Novella, which faces the square with its best part. The Romanesque facade of the church was remodeled by the famous Leon Alberti to make it an example of the style. In the central part of the square there are flower beds, a fountain and two 16th-century obelisks created by the sculptor Bartolomeo Ammannati. The pedestals are supported by bronze tortoises, created in 1608 during Giambologna's free time from the Rape of the Sabines. Along the perimeter of the square there are buildings built in different centuries. Opposite Santa Maria Novella is the Hospital of San Paolo, dating back to the 13th century, predating the church itself. The loggia of 10 arches of the hospital was built according to the design of Michelozzo, who took as a basis the loggia of Brunelleschi's Orphanage. So successful that the authorship of this loggia was attributed to the author of the famous dome of the Duomo. The hospitals have not treated anyone for a long time, but show paintings by contemporary Italian artists, who find it difficult to compete with the creations of the Uffizi and Pitti palaces. Among other buildings on the square, the Pitti-Broccardi Palace is interesting, where Luca Pitti lived, who ordered the construction of a palace named after him, but did not manage its maintenance. Almost the entire area, except for the church and the San Paolo hospital, is occupied along the perimeter by 3-4 star hotels. And another notable establishment associated with the Church of Santa Maria Novella is located on Via della Scala, tangentially passing through the square. You need to turn right from the San Paolo Hospital and at number 16 go to the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella. It is the oldest pharmacy in Europe and one of the oldest businesses in Europe, continuously operating since 1612. Founded by the Dominican monks of Santa Maria Novella, it no longer sells medicines, but sells perfumes and other aromas.

From the outside the church is decorated in the same style as the Duomo. However, what the church lacks in size compared to the Duomo, it is far more impressive from the inside with beautiful wall and ceiling paintings and works of art. The buildings surrounding the church such as the cloisters and the Spanish Chapel are stunning with wall paintings that are in different stages of deterioration. It's such a peaceful place to visit and not vey busy when I visited in the early afternoon. This was the best 10 Euros I had ever spent.

Great trip. A pleasant city with a lot of social life and despite many monuments to see. Our stay at the hotel GRAND BAGLIONI FLORENCE was unforgettable. 500 meters from Duomo.

A nice and spacious square in Florence with the beautiful Neo-Renaissance Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, after which it got its name. There are also two unmissable marble obelisks on the square. Each of them is topped with a Florentine lily, the symbol of the city.

The square is located opposite the train station and is a popular place to relax and meet. It is interspersed with large green areas lined with colorful flowers and plenty of benches to sit on.

The square is not shaded by any trees or mature greenery, so it is quite hot on summer days. However, there are many cafes, restaurants and pastry shops on the sides of the square.

The most beautiful atmosphere is in the square just before sunset, when its golden rays illuminate the beautiful Basilica of Santa Maria Novella.

Situated not far from the train station, this large, roughly pentagon-shaped piazza has a number of hotels, restaurants, and stores around the perimeter with some vendors during the day. There is also a taxi stand of sorts at the south end that always have one or two waiting for customers. The park-like setting (there is more green here than in a typical piazza) is a good place to sit an admire the basilica, enjoy a gelato, or just watch the world go by. We always felt very safe here - people around no matter what time of the day or night.

This is a beautiful vibrant square in Florence surrounded by cafes and restaurants.

On the edge is the imposing Basilica of Santa Maria Novella's with a Renaissance facade.

This piazza was born in 1287. It has two marble obelisks, and sitting ontop four bronze turtles.

We started our walking tour from these obelisks.

This square is easily recognized by its main sight - the church of Santa Maria Novella. Its facade dates to the 1470s and it is the oldest standing facade to still exist in Florence. There are also two marble obelisks in the piazza. On the side opposite the church there is Novecento Museum, a museum dedicated to contemporary works of art. Nearby is another popular site - Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella on Via della Scala. The square is also close to the train station.

The Piazza Santa Maria Novella is one of the most charming squares in central Floreance.
Of course, the 13th-15th century Dominican Basilica of Santa Maria Novella's Renaissance facade is the most impressive.
But also the Hospital of San Paolo (now the Novecento Museum) is awesome.
There are several restaurants ariound the square, which make it worth to stay here for a while and enjoy the surroundings.

Since the hotel is located on Via della Scala, we pass by Santa Maria Novella Square many times. There are many churches, hotels, and restaurants around the square, so it is always crowded. The daytime and nighttime views have different atmospheres, so we enjoyed both.

Great plaza to walk around and lots cafes to sit and people watch. Big obelisk opposite the Santa Maria Novella church. It’s pretty close to the train station so everyone basically passes through here. Perfect place to chill out after all day walking.

This is an absolutely elegant square especially with the Santa Maria Novella being the main attraction. This is a very nice and lively plaza where one can sit and have a snack or icecream. Most people just sit around and enjoy the scenery.
100% recommend.

Piazza di Santa Maria Novella is quite a large square. It is named after the Basilica which is the most obvious attraction in this area. It is close to the Railway station and several other attractions.

If you take the train into Florence you will must likely walk through the Piazza di Santa Maria Novella and your way to seeing the sights of the city. It's a beautiful example of a Piazza in Tuscany. There are plenty of places to stop and get something to eat or drink as well as possibly visiting the church that is right on the Piazza.
