This is a wonderful garden, especially the box hedges and the ponds. The view over Florence is an extra plus. It also was very still and quiet the day we were there. Get there by bus 10 + a steep walk.

The gardens of Villa Gamberaia are a must see for anyone interested in villa architecture and/or the formal gardens of Tuscany. See the BBC video by Monty Don before you go - it will enhance your appreciation of this unique villa significantly. Note: this is an italianate garden of toped shrubs, pools and terracotta statues. Hard to find, and needs a small car to get close as the village and lanes are extremely narrow - but once you're there, what a lovely garden. Fading quietly, but clearly attempts are being made to stop further decline; perfect formal Italian garden with statues, water, and fragrance everywhere from roses, herbs, pelargoniums and huge pots of lemon trees.... If old world charm is what you are looking for, this is a wonderful place to stay. The apartments are very clean although not posh. I went with a large group of painters on a painting retreat and had a great time. The staff are warm and friendly, the chef had a multi-course dinner for us each night and served... More

On the hills around Florence Villa Gamberaia boasts sweeping views over Florence and the Arno valley and sits amidst a spectacular Renaissance Garden. You can get there from Piazza San Marco with Bus nr.10 and then a short walk. www.villagamberaia.com

We caught the bus from Florence, which was very pleasant and easy, and walked the short way to the garden, which was a lovel walk. The garden was very well tended, and had amazing views over Florence, and the surrounding coutryside. Lovely way to spend a morning!

We loved visiting this garden. There are beautiful views over Florence. We went in late April and so there weren't many flowers in bloom, though there was a very peaceful atmosphere.
