About
Love Duets’ Concert: you do not have to be a lover of Italian Opera to enjoy this wonderful evening. It’s set in a small church from 1800’s. You have a piano, soprano & tenor performing Opera’s love song and Italian love songs. The setting and performance is overwhelmingly powerful. You’ll be moved to tears by the emotions. Not to be missed.

    Superb. Must Experience in Florence
This is an budget way of experiencing an opera in Florence, but it is an absolute superb experience. The performance is in a small church to small intimate audience. There is no need upgrade your tickets, but if you do you will be literally within touching distance of the performers. There is a narration in English at the start and in between acts which informs the novice opera goer. Prosecco served at the break. This was our first opera experience, and we have not stopped talking about it. A must experience when in Florence.

Opera Gala at St Marks in Florence
Every Saturday evening there is a 1 hour concert of opera highlights performed at St Marks. We attended the premier evening, and had a wonderfully good time. The songs are well known. The 2 singers and accompanying pianist are excellent. They put on a terrific performance while keeping the atmosphere light and entertaining. I enjoy a little light opera, but having only ever attended one entire live opera, I would not, therefore, describe myself as a die-hard aficionado. With a running time of 1 hour, this is an excellent evening for anyone who enjoys opera at any level. Tickets are available through the website associazioneilcontrappunto. Go and enjoy the show!

    Great evening out.
The pianist and compere was talented and confident in both functions. A tenor and superb soprano sang well known, easy listening, Arias. Of course it's not a full opera but an excellent night of light entertainment. Highly recommended.

When I am in Firenze, whether with my husband, or solo as I was this time, I make it a point to attend these delightful operatic performances at St. Mark’s Church. I always leave smiling and uplifted. The singers were very good!! This performance focused on famous operatic duets — great for date night and romantics like me :-) After two years of Covid—the musicians and we the audience were both especially enthusiastic and joyful. I am grateful for this musical group dedicated to bringing opera to Firenze. This particular performance ended with jovial Neapolitan songs. The last performance I had seen years ago was a rendition of Carmen. Viva L’Italia! E’ grazie mille 🙏🏻

This theatre within a church offers a great introduction to Opera lirica. Not only good singers in beautiful costumes but the basic story is explained before each separate act. A wonderful experience which never fails to please.

We actually went twice while on our annual extended stay in Florence. It was our 6th and 7th time at St. Marks. That in itself speaks volumes; but I will add some comments.
We appreciate the attenuated performance with hi-lights and commentary/explanations which add a lot for context (often with good humour). The talent are fantastic, of course. The venue has wonderful acoustics and is a delightful way to experience opera. The location is convenient to center-city. The staff are warm and welcoming.
We have attended other musical performances in Florence, and although they all have been excellent (indeed awesome), we always make it a point to return to St Marks. We are looking forward to our next visit and strongly recommend you join us there while enjoying this amazing city.

Bravo!! Small, intimate and special describe where opera comes alive in this hidden jewel. I’ve attended concerts and operas at the Opera at St. Mark’s Anglican church many times with my family. It has become a Must See whenever we visit Florence, Italy. The acoustics are greatly elevated with operatic voices and are absolutely amazing in this sacred space. Franz, the professional Director, is lovely and gracious, who describes in English what performance we are about to be immersed in. Such a beautiful and private night every time. I can’t wait to go back!

There are so many things to see and do in Florence, but make sure you don’t miss the opera at St Marks. The church is beautiful, the setting so intimate and the performers amazingly talented. We had goosebumps. After our first visit, we immediately booked tickets for a second performance. Franz is not only a gifted host, but we found for our second show also a brilliant pianist. It truly was one of the highlights of our month in Florence. Tickets are easy to book and reasonably priced. Don’t miss this if you are in Florence.

We have attended three times, twice for an abridged version and once for highlights. All were marvelous. Like all the positive reviewers, I knew what to expect and appreciate. So I am offended by the ignorant negative reviews that say more about the writers than the performers. How can they review something they've never attended? How can they review something by comparing it to something it is not claiming to be? How can they not be swept away by the immediate presence and talent of people right in front of them? So I heartily recommend "Opera at St Marks." If you like music, like people and like an existential moment in time, you will be delighted. Enjoy. - Greg

My husband and I were so excited to see something akin to Italian opera while on our honeymoon on Saturday, April 14, 2012. A month in advance, I researched options and then made an emailed reservation for tickets. Someone named Franz Moser contacted me and stated that the tickets would be available with good seats NOT behind a pillar – specifically third row center. He stated in his response the following exact quote, “…your reservation is confirmed - see you April 14th at 8.15 pm at the door in Via Maggio 18, where you will get two tickets under your name, paying cash on arrival, that's all we need...” He then proceeded to send me more emails, making sure I was coming (?) and I replied that I was indeed coming. We were coming from across the world, on a honeymoon, and this was part of our trip!

Then, the night arrived. We made our way over to the church in heavy rainstorms and got in line about a quarter after 8. After we waited and reached the ticket lady, it was exactly 8:20, 10 minutes before the performance. First the lady asked me to pay more than the quoted price. I corrected her, and she reluctantly said, “OK” to paying the price quoted in the email confirmation and on the website. Then, she sneered at us and proclaimed loudly that “we just gave your seats to someone else because you are late!”

Late? I told her there is still a line behind us and it is 10 minutes until the performance starts! Why would our seats be given away? She told me that “we were told to be here at 8:15 or else…” I stated that wasn’t exactly true, but even if it was, we were here…in line. Then the couple behind us leaned forward and whispered, “Gee, we reserved on line, too…I hope they didn’t give our seats away!” They had not.

The rude ticket lady then called over a man who was walking around the small church, seating people. I don’t know if this was “Franz” or not, but he then looked at our name and stated loudly, “you are late, and so we just now gave your seats away. I will have to see what is left to seat you.” UNBELEIVABLE. TRULY.

We were escorted to the front of the room, where we were made to stand and gawk until almost show time, then placed behind the performers and a couple of pillars in seats that were terrible, and clearly a punishment of some kind. As we stood humiliated, we noticed that others were being given their “reserved” seats (there were even signs with everyone’s names on them!), even though they were behind us in line.

After we were seated, I was in tears (on my honeymoon, mind you), and my husband and I walked back up to the ticket lady and requested our money back. I then told both people that my reviews would reflect the treatment we received.
I have never in my life experienced such horrible behavior at an arts event. We did everything correctly, and were visiting their country from abroad…still making our way ON TIME in an unfamiliar city in a rainstorm. I was also deathly ill, but wanted to make sure I came. This is the treatment we got.

I don’t know for sure if they actually gave our seats away…as this makes no sense. We had reserved one month in advance and confirmed we were coming. I suspect something foul, in that I caught the woman trying to charge me more. I also suspect possible mistreatment due to my husband and I being in an interracial relationship. I don’t know for sure, but the treatment was absolutely a nightmare. Thank you, St. Marks Opera people, for your horrible treatment and welcome to Florence. Your attitudes and behavior seriously need adjustment and an apology would be the least of what you could do for us. Travelers, please look elsewhere for opera in Italy, perhaps at a bigger and more professionally behaving company.

The high rating of this opera company is misleading so I will attempt to set the record straight. It is a very small venue. In US theater we call it a black box theater. The church is beautiful and intimate. There are large pillars everywhere that, unless you're lucky enough to nab front row seats facing the alter, are going to impair your view at times. The seating is on three sides. The actors' "stage" (term is used loosely because it's really just floor space) is about 20 feet square. There is no orchestra, only a piano. The sets are bare-bones -- 2 benches for one scene, a table and chairs/stools for another scene, etc. The singers bring props to help. Costuming is ok (although Carmen's hem needed repairing and it drove me crazy) but not elaborate and the costume changes are minimal. Casting--I felt like the title role could probably have been cast better for age and ability.

"Carmen," done by a large company is truly amazing, and it's nearly impossible to compare this little production. One of the best elements is that the narrator/stage hand/light guy/etc comes out before every act and explains what is about to happen. The explanation is somewhat necessary because of the barebones storytelling that such a small ensemble is able to present.

In the production of "Carmen" there were 5 singers. The singing was ok - realize that this is not "The Met" or even a premier opera company. These are well-trained singers covering a tremendous amount of material.

St. Mark's was an enjoyable evening out but for real opera fans it's a disappointment. It's probably better suited for those who are not opera savvy. It is written in the program that patrons are encouraged to post a review on Trip Advisor, so it's pretty clear that they are gaining most of their audience through Trip Advisor reviews. Finally, price. It cost two of us $100 for tickets and fees. That's outrageous in my book. The tickets should be no more than $20-$25 each. For our level of opera appreciation I wish we'd spent our money seeing a premier, large opera company perform. There's no way this little production can live up to the hype and price.

Note: If you want a program you must purchase it for 1 euro each. It's a poor excuse of a program -- a photocopied, slapped together affair in several languages. For the ticket price the program should have been complimentary.

I vsited Florence in mid July and desperately wanted to find an operatic performance but rhere were very few options available at the time. The "Night at the Opera Saint Marks" enterprise offers regular performances with various programs. I attended the operatic duets concert, it also included some solo piano works. The tickets were available at the location for 25 Euros. There were three performers - a tenor, a soprano, and an accompanist. I enjoyed certain aspects of the evening - the fact that I was listening to Italian opera in Florence - a long-help dream - moved me. The performers acted their parts and showed vocal skill. One additional and an important element of these concetts is the fact that a part of the revenue supports charities, and you will be asked to donate as well. And so, if you are a real opera buff and expect world-class performance, changes are you will not be satified, but if you want to experience breathtaking Italian music in a breathtaking Italian city and support local artists and charities, you would undoubtedly enjoy the Nigt at the Opera Saint Mark's Florence.

We thoroughly enjoyed attending The Barber of Seville and La Boheme at St. Mark's. Thanks to our wonderful hosts, Inge and Franz, the talented performers and their excellent accompanist Cristiano on the piano.

Front row centre for 45 Euro (profits all earmarked for charity) - two metres from the action happening on the same level (ie no stage) - with everyone having fun! One can see how the singers themselves are having a good time acting, relating with each other and the intimate close-by audience, and with winks to their accompanist. Franz is narrator (in English), stage hand and at times actor, and adds some humour to the goings-on.

You feel that you are in a group of friends with some putting on a show for their own and your entertainment. Nonetheless, this is serious opera, performed by accomplished and talented artists. There is realism - my wife cried at the end of La Boheme! But instead of being in a large hall spending hundreds of Euro for a seat, with the performers far away and aloof, you are with them. The acoustics in the church are excellent and although the "orchestra" is only one piano, it is played by a Maestro.

Too bad we only went twice - Florence may have Michaelangelo's, Donatello's and even some Leonardo's, but a reason to return would be to go to the Opera at St. Mark's!
