Private guided tour of Tuscany

Andrea and his team of professionals arranged a picture-perfect day of touring and wineries for our group. Andrea not only helped to outline and plan the day based on the particular likes of our travelers but created a flawless and memorable day of sights and smells in Tuscany. His consistent degree of professionalism is unsurpassed and I would Highly recommend arranging any day of touring with this company. Incredibly wonderful and I look forward to hopefully working with them again!

I have traveled with Andrea and "Under the Tuscan Sun Tours" during earlier visits to Italy, specifically Florence, and I have always found his service to his customers to be exceptional. He is extremely knowledgable of the country he loves dearly, and he was thrilled to share some of the traditions and customs of the Italian people while he served as our tour guide. This trip to Italy, October of 2022, we booked a tour of the Chianti wine country, visiting two vineyards and sampling local products and wines, and once again Andrea went "above and beyond" expectations in accommodating the wishes of our group. He is very professional in his dealings, completely fair in the pricing of his tours, friendly to all his customers, very fluent in English, and enthusiastic in sharing his love of his beloved Italy. I cannot recommend Andrea and "Under the Tuscan Sun Tours" more highly. He and his company are a "Must" for anyone wishing to see, and experience, Italy. I will use "Under the Tuscan Sun Tours" in the future any time I wish to travel anywhere in Italy. They are the BEST! Thank you, Andrea, for another fantastic visit to your country.

AMAZING day you will remember forever

Had an incredible time with Andrea driving us up from Florence into Tuscany countryside. He was kind and knowledgeable and accommodating. We booked the 1/2 day wine tour and on the way there were talking about wanting to truffle hunt with dogs and he made a call and made it happen. We enjoyed 10 great wines, an amazing meal with grandma's lasagna, olive oil, aged balsamic, and yummy pork! The food was great, Moreno the truffle hunter was incredible and his two dogs were amazing. What a great experience we will all never forget!

Horrible Behavior by Owner/Driver

We booked multiple experiences through Under the Tuscan Sun. Some worked well—the transfer from the airport to our hotel, and the walking tour of Tuscany and subsequent Uffizi/Academia tour with Costanza. She was excellent.

However, we were scheduled to do a Valdorcia tour with the company that turned into a disaster, with the owner/driver, Andrea, calling angrily AFTER our pickup time to announce he was lost. I attempted to give him directions, during which he repeatedly interrupted me and accused me of lying about the face that there was a sign with the name of our villa at its entrance.

I asked an Italian member of the household to speak with him. Andrea became increasingly agitated, loud, and abusive, leaving the poor woman in tears. I then spoke to him again, at which point he announced he was leaving and would refund the tour cost. Twenty minutes later, he showed up (now about a half hour late), and proved to be loud, angry and abusive. We asked him to leave, given his outrageous and childish behavior.

Since then he has refused to respond to requests for a refund. In looking through reviews of the company, it’s clear that many others have had nearly identical experiences, and the common factor seems to be the incredibly outrageous conduct of the owner, Andrea.

I can’t say it strongly enough…they may get the simple stuff right, but you’re taking a huge chance with this company. The owner seems to vacillate between being friendly and completely losing his cool…with customers…when HE screws up. Take a look not only at the reviews that detail this, but also at his angry attacks on customers in response to those complaints.

Some have suggested in these reviews, and in Google reviews, that Andrea is mentally imbalanced. I don’t know if that’s accurate, but he certainly is capable of incredibly rude, aggressive, and unprofessional behavior. STEER CLEAR.

Shame! These "gentlemen" contacted our agency and wrote dozens of emails, always changing their minds about the program and also asking to find their private chef and jazz singer for his private villa which they then canceled at the last minute. They have treated our staff and the people who have worked with us since 1980 horribly. They are just rude! They changed programs and dates all the time and also the number of participants. First they had to be 8 then 5 then 6. They did 2 walking tours with us and we were flexible and we accepted all their schedule changes! They had a canceled flight, they had to land in the morning and we caught them in the late afternoon! But above all they provided completely wrong name and address of the Villa (name of villa La Piana and it's called Cerreto, address Siena and it was in Castelnuovo B, no sign no informations and nobody answer to us plus...Wrong gps coordinates!). Only thanks to the professionalism of our drivers we were able to find the villa (at night and in the open countryside and with Alison customer on board who knew nothing!). On the day of the Valdorcia tour they refused to leave with our driver and they offended and treated him badly. We already pay all the Valdorcia Tour included lunch, wine tour and Brunello Tasting at wine estates and ask to us the money back! Shame! Never happened in 40 years of tourism!

To avoid, complicated communication

In the end, I didn't book with this company, but I want to share my experience to help others avoid wasting time. I had originally written to Andrea through Facebook as he has posted the company's services in the Foreigners in Florence Facebook group.
I had asked for two separate services on a Saturday (pick up and drop off of 20 people from Chianti to Florence and then back) and a Sunday (drop off at Rome airport) at the end of September.
I wrote to him in July to get a quote. We messaged back and forth a few times and then switched to Whatsapp. There seemed to be misunderstandings writing in English because I kept sending him our itinerary of the day with the pickup times, and he kept asking how many hours we needed someone for. All of the information was in the file.
He said that he sent me an email with the quote, but I had never even given him my email address. Then I provided him with it but still received nothing.
We were writing on a Saturday, so I asked if I could call him on Sunday just to discuss the plan. I prefer to speak on the phone to communicate best.
He said that he couldn't talk to me until the following weekend because he was on vacation with his daughter. I fully understand that everyone deserves time off, but if you are messaging me anyway on a Saturday, I feel like you can take 5 minutes to talk to me on the phone. He also kept insinuating how it would be so hard for us to find a driver with such little notice, almost like he was doing us a favor.
I didn't have time to wait for the following weekend to talk to him. In the meantime I found someone else, and I sent my apologies and canceled. He was extremely rude and said that he would never want to do business with a customer like me.
I'm not saying my time is more important than his, but if you are writing to me on a Saturday anyway, what does it cost you to talk to me on the phone for a few minutes? Or we could have spoken on Monday. Especially after he never sent me an email or any document for me to keep for my records of the booking.
TO AVOID. UNPROFESSIONAL.

I recently had the pleasure of touring Italy with Andrea as our guide. From the moment we arrived, Andrea went above and beyond to make sure our trip was seamless and enjoyable.

His knowledge of Italian history and culture was extensive and he was able to bring each location we visited to life with interesting content and facts.

But what really sets Andrea apart is his kindness and professionalism. He is always punctual and reliable, and he goes out of his way to make sure we have a great time. Whether it was recommending a local restaurant or giving us ideas for other attractions, Andrea was so helpful every step of the way.

This was our second trip with Andrea, and he feels like family at this point. We couldn’t ask for more.

I highly recommend Andrea and Under the Tuscan Sun Tours to anyone looking to experience the beauty and culture of Italy. His attention to detail, warmth and personalized approach always makes our trip to Florence truly unforgettable.

Long story short: We had a terrible experience; Andreas poor behavior is consistent with the 25 other one-star reviews here: Andrea (owner/driver) flipped out on us for texting to ask where he was because we couldnt find him an hour after our tasting ended. He flipped out, insulted us (he said our friend who texted was the worst person he’s ever met and asked if she was a mistress), wouldn’t allow us to speak to de-escalate the situation, and told us to find a taxi home from the tour! He eventually drove us back, but skipped a whole leg (michaelangelo square) which we paid for.

This is not a “tour”. It’s just Andrea driving you to tenuta torciano winery and back (and putting a markup on it). You could get yourself there and have the same tasting without the risk of andrea being unstable. Please read the other negative reviews and you’ll see this is a pattern. More importantly: read his responses to the negative reviews to see how unprofessional he is.

'Under the tuscan sun' has been working in the tourist field since 1980. Our best clients are from the USA. After our tours in Italy, our clients are above all friends, because they are all satisfied with our services. As you can see in the several positive reviews! The problem with this girl from New York is : ignorance! We cannot fight against ignorance, it's impossible! I think this girl is really stressed. There's something wrong with her....more than something She was so arrogant with me and wrote a review, which is absolutely not true. She didn't read anything about the tour she bought on line, that's all the problem. First of all she thought to buy a 5 hours wine tour, visiting different wineries. The tour included only one winery indeed! Then, she bought a shared tour with other clients, and she was 25 minutes late. Normally in this case, it's a non show. That is they lose all, being late at the appointment, because of course the other clients cannot wait for them ! By the way, I was able to arrange all, and I was kind to pick them up for the wine tour. During the tour, I tried to tell about the story of Tuscany and wine. They were absent and did not participate to the conversation at all. I don't really understand! You are here for this! That's why they got nothing else than the wine tasting. After we arrived at the winery, they complained about all. For example, they complained that they couldn't find me. I was waiting for them there inside! Exactly behind them! Finally at 18 after the wine tasting, this girl wanted to visit other winery. I showed her that she booked only one! Being gentle and professional, in order to try to do something, I suggested going to San Gimignano and to Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence, even if it was not included in her tour. She started insulting me, and I told her to be polite. No way! The only thing I could do was to pick them up back to Florence. At our arrival, I greeted and they did not do the same, turning round the corner

We signed up for the Chianti Winemaker tour which according to the description on the website was supposed to take us to three wineries and San Gimignano. When we first met our driver it was clear that he didn’t speak good English but we confirmed that this was the Chianti winemaker tour. We went to the first winery which was great. We tried 8 or 9 different wines and had a typical Tuscan lunch paired with some olive oil and balsamic vinegar made by the same winery. We were having a great time up until we left that winery. The driver then dropped us off at San Gimignano and said he would pick us up in 1.5 hr. This seemed like a long time considering that we thought we had two more wineries to go to but we went with it. When the driver picked us back up, we went on a long drive to another city where he was going to drop us off again and pick us up later. That is when we stated that we were supposed to be going to two more wineries. The driver just kept saying that he was just the driver and they had only told him to take us to one winery. He finally called someone and took us to another winery. It was clear that they had put it together at the last minute as the winery was not ready for us. We just did a regular tasting as if we had walked in like any other guest. The driver paid for the tastings before we left and by then it was too late to go to another winery so he took us home.

It was clear that they had taken us on the wrong tour and was not what we had paid for. And this was after I sent the company multiple emails in the days/weeks before to confirm our reservation. The company confirmed our tour multiple times but apparently that wasn’t enough.

Book direct with winery (Ternuta Torcino). Avoid Andrea at all costs!

As expected, Andrea’s reply to Christina’s review below is full of inaccuracies.

1. We were not 25 mins late. We warned him in advance that we would be 5 minutes late. When we arrived and couldn’t find Andrea at the pickup spot, we connected to Wi-Fi at the Balestri hotel and texted him (11 minutes after the tour began), but he told us he already left. Screenshots attached.

2. We were flexible and rescheduled the tour for the next day. On the drive to the winery, he says we were “absent”. Not true. During the drive, we all talked. He didn’t give us many facts, but did tell us about his cousin’s leather shop when we asked. Andrea’s wife was kind and friendly the whole ride. We even told her to email us when she was ready to go to NY, and we’d help plan her itinerary since she has never been.

3. Andrea said in his reply that we complained the whole time at the winery, but he wasn’t even with us. He dropped us off, then the people from the winery took over. We enjoyed the winery very much: the tasting, the family members we met and the food were all great! It’s why we suggest booking directly through the winery website (Tenuta Toricano)

4. An hour after the tasting ended, we looked for Andrea and couldn’t find him. We then texted to see where he was, since we were never given a meeting time. When we found him, we asked if we were going to another winery or if something else was next as we were simply confused. He immediately started saying horrible things to us and yelling. Again, we were not complaining, we were only asking about the itinerary, but he just kept yelling and wouldn’t calm down, despite us all being calm.

5. He says in his note below that our tour didn’t include a Michaelangelo stop, but it did. He never offered us to go there or to any of the other places he’s claiming. He actually threatened us and told us to take a cab home. In the end, he drove us home. We rode home in complete silence. In the car ride home, my friends and I read all the negative reviews on Tripaadvisor… and it all made sense….

Excellent option for shuttle services

We booked a few shuttle services through Under the Tuscan Sun while we were waiting for our rental car to be available. All shuttles were right on time and went smoothly. We wanted to do a full Florence day (pick up from our AirBnb and drop off in Florence and vice versa ) and our driver for that day was Andrea who went above and beyond during the shuttle drives. He was funny and courteous and would tell us facts about the area that we were driving through, recommendations for places to see in Florence and even reached out to a friend who owned a restaurant and was able to get us a reservation. He was a total delight and we would absolutely use them again if we were in the area!
