Statua di Giovanni dalle Bande Nere is an unusual statue. It represents a Medici Family member. The Medicis were fabulously wealthy and powerful for a very long time. The strange thing is that the man is shown seated, rather than standing. The reason is that it was intended to be placed elsewhere. It is in the Piazza San Lorenzo, opposite the Basilica di San Lorenzo.

Sitting on the northeast corner of Piazza San Leonardo atop a large marble pedestal with four symbolic Doric columns supporting a cornice upon which the plinth and statue rest is the statue of Lodovico di’Medici. He was a mercenary soldier in the employ of many Popes. The pedestal is decorated with a relief of a battle scene on the front side and an epigraph and small fountain on the back. The sides are emblazoned with the Medici emblem. His son was Cosimo I.
