This unique Florentine piazza is the center of the artisan quarter. Dominated by the last masterpiece of Brunelleschi, the Basilica of Santo Spirito, the square is home to little local markets and antique fairs.

Our hostel was close to this piazza so we went there a few times. It was clean, not so crowded as other squares in Florence and the whole vibe was lovely. I enjoyed the market on Sunday, there were stands of food, flowers, clothes, shoes and jewelry too.

Staying just round the corner from this lovely Piazza, we ended up sitting for an hour or two just about every night of our holiday. At one end is the church of Santo Spirito, beautifully lit to show off it's imposing dominance of the Piazza. Along one side are several small, quiet bars and a few small restaurants. In the far corner the excellent "Osteria Santo Spirito". Once the sun goes down, crowds of happy and interesting people collect to sit in the outside bars, enjoying a glass of inexpensive wine, or just sit around and chat. Just about every night there is something going on, whether it is a relatively new box office film, projected onto the wall of the church, or an impromptu music group or even a full blown opera performance of extremely high quality. I agree that the square itself could do with a bit of T & C to clean away some daily litter but this is not reflected in the bars or restaurants. The atmosphere was always one of relaxed and happy enjoyment and the opportunity to sit and watch the world go by.

There's really nothing going on here. Maybe if you come during a festival or something, but don't bother coming here. It was a long walk out of the way for me and I regret it. It's nothing bad, just nothing at all.

If you want to get the feel of Florence's local life, Piazza Santo Spirito is one of the best places to do so. Buzzing with local life, this piazza is home to great restaurants (e.g. Osteria Santo Spirito), cosy aperitivo spots (e.g. PopCafe) and more. Of course, you can always hang out at the stairs of the church of Santo Spirito with a glass of wine or a pizza from nearby Gusto Pizza and simply experience what it feels like to be a local in this beautiful city!

If you are sick of the tourists and the crowds, head over to Santo Spirito. Otherwise known as "the artists quarter", this quaint area is a nice reprieve. There are wonderful shops and restaurants and every morning a small farm market in the Piazza. If you want a "true" taste of Tuscan lifestyle, then head over to The other side of the Arno and visit Piazza Santo Spirito.

According to my friends living in Florence, this is the place where the real italian people hang out at night and have drinks. That I don't know, but one thing it's true: there are not as many tourists here as in the other places I've been to in Florence.
I just went there during the day but I really enjoyed it: it has nice restaurants and bars. If it's sunny, you can sit around and have a nice time in the light.
I recommend passing by, for a less touristic but genuinely italian moment.

we happened to stay in an apartment near Pitti Palace and discoverd the Piazza by chance
We went everywhere in Florence; museums, galleries, churches.
The fondest memories however were of the Piazza Santa Spirito as it allowed us to get a glimpse of real local life and feel part of it.
The local market on the square is on most days and has fresh local produce; the bazaar keeps you entertained for hours and ranges from artefacts to more unusual items not seen in other parts of florence.
The restaurants are mostly unpretentious and inexpensive but full of character and style!
After a day's sightseeingI I found myself always ending up in the square for a relaxing and enjoyable evening.
Visit the Piazza before it is discovered by the hordes of tourists and changes it's character!!!

This is not a famous touristic place but if you want to take a rest from the site seeing, to relax and take a look at the life of the locals, this piazza is the right place. There are good local coffee places, a local market, young people strolling around, and nearby some of the cheapest restaurants of the town. At this square was made the great Italian comedy "I amici miei" (=my honorable friends), a funny and bitter aspect to the life of Florentine people at the 70's.

I felt in love with this square! It is simple and pleasant, with nice bars around, a fountain... I felt like I was in the countryside. Don't miss it!

My entire second trip to Italy WAS to stay away from the tourist attractions. Wanted to live like an Italian for 3 weeks, and not live like a tourist. Loved Santo Spitito for that very reason.

I guess you are referring to the Basilica di Santo Spirito.
The Basilica has intermittent tourist opening times and when we visited in May these were 9.30AM till 12.30PM and 4.00PM to 5.30PM but these are not always adhered to and the church is definitely shut all day Wednesday.

I'm staying to Florence for three nights in May. I love arty, local, a little bohemian atmosphere and going to rent an airbnb and hang out like a local. IThinking of SAnto Spirito or St Niccolo areas? Any thoughts if this is too far from the main areas. I plan to take a train to Lucca one day.

Santa Spirito is not far from the main areas. At Santa Spirito you can find a good mix of locals and tourists. There are great restaurants over there. On certain days there is also a market.
We loved the atmosphere there.

What time on Sunday would you say is the best to get there?
