Climb the hill from Florence center to the top of Michelangelo Plaza, and along the way DON'T miss the tiny shop no bigger than your walkin closet. It's got the most delicate, simple, beautiful hand-painted watercolors of all things Florence (and then some). Priced between $5-$20 Euro, it cannot be beat. I made the mistake of not buying when I was here in 2017, but made good in 2019.

We stumbled on this teeny little shop as we walked down the pedestrian route from Piazzale Michelangelo. Somewhat hidden on the street that leads from the rose garden to San Miniato al Monte is this beautiful art store. In a city where a lot of the street art isn't original, Junko Mukai's store is a wonderful place to get real art from a talented artist. When we visited, the artist was at a desk painting the works that would later go on sale. The artist is very personable and has a resume including a degree in literature in Japan, jewelry making training in Florence, water color training in Florence, and picture book study at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts! We could not resist purchasing a panorama of Florence! This shop is worth searching out!!

I stepped by this small workplace by chance and my eye was caught by paintings with cats. It was so tiny and cute, I had to stop to have a look. I really liked the simple yet beautiful and delicate style. I had a crush on a small painting with 3 little cats in front of the Duomo. So in love with it ! If you're looking for an original souvenir, a masterpiece that you can own, this is the right place to go.

One afternoon, my niece and I hiked up to San Miniato al Monte to take in the views of Florence. On our way down the hill, we happened upon this delightful watercolor shop. The artist, Junko Mukai, and her husband sell quixotic watercolors that capture the spirit of Tuscany. When we visited, she was in the shop working on a new painting. I bought the small watercolor pictured here. It was painted by her husband, Gabriele Marchese.
