Neighborhood: Piazzale Michelangelo
Just outside the ancient walls of Florence, Viale Michelangiolo starts. It is a winding road rimmed by wonderful poplars and holm oaks. The long ascent opens up to the most beautiful and famous panoramic viewpoint of Florence: Piazzale Michelangelo, where an elevated terrace offers visitors an incomparable and breathtaking view of the entire city from above. During good weather, Piazzale Michelangelo provides visitors with a serene space surrounded by the amazing landscape, better if accompanied by a fresh gelato from a local kiosk. During night, visitors will be dazzled by the warm lights of the capital of the Renaissance. Spend a second with the silent Romanesque beauty of the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte: the one that wishes good morning and good night to Florence!

I am not very fond of visiting cemeteries, but this one shouldn’t be missed. The monumental cemetery (how it is often called) is located within the fortification complex of the Basilica and it holds the burial sites of many famous Italians with memorable headstones or even sculptures over the graves all over the cemetery.

Next to the church was the Cimitero delle Porte Sante (Cemetery of the Holy Doors), which is called a monumental cemetery because of the many elaborate headstones (often sculptures) throughout the cemetery. As we walked through, we noted many graves followed the Italian custom of having permanent photographs of the deceased attached to them. Many famous Italians are buried, such as Carlo Collodi, who created Pinocchio, painter Pietro Annigoni, and politician Giovanni Spadolini.

Great walk from the heart of Florence through it can be a little tough at times being uphill a lot of the way but worth it. The views are amazing and once of my most favorite places to visit when I am in Florence.

Beautiful old cemetery. We have visited it in evening, so it was almost empty-we so only 3 or 4 other visitors. In some parts cemetery looked very creepy-crypts, tombstones and statues looked like decorations of horror movie.

Quite a hike from Florence centre but there's regular public transport. The cemetery itself is interesting but the views from around it and below are stunning and well worth the effort of getting here.

This is a really beautiful church to visit if you can walk up the hill. It also rewards you with lovely views across the city and a break from the crowds. You can also walk around the corner to Piazzale Michelangelo

We first walked through this gorgeous and historic cemetery that goes on and on before enjoying vespers with the monks inside the basilica. The entire grounds were a well needed break from the crowds and vendors, and the pairing of nature and history were beautiful. It is all Free and strongly encouraged!
