Built in 1485 by engineer and architect Francesco di Giorgio (1439-1501,) this church is a fine example of Renaissance architecture with its octagonal-domed shape.

It is very nice to see some old buildings in their original state, this landmark has not had much restoration done to it and is not well visited. If you have an afternoon in Cortona and are looking to experience some old world architecture, this is worth the visit.

This church initially looked abandoned. It is just outside the city. The inside is neat and in good repair. It appears to be larger than the Duomo in Cortona

This church is located on the way to Cortona and worth of stopping. You enter by car from above, drive down one way, exit below. They started to build the church 1485 and finished 1513 and surrounded by some olive trees and cemetery. It is interesting also to walk through small Italian cemetery to see how locals remember their passed... More

This church is right by the Villa - a great place to check out. Down the hill from the town of Cortona

While just out of town on one of the feeder routes up to Cortona, this small Duomo reveals the sweetness of Cortona's spiritual life. The inside is a little bit dark but you feel the spirit's presence. The cemetery is a few meters up the hillside, but a great look at Cortona history and culture. Good luck and enjoy!

We didn't have an opportunity to visit but I took this great photo of it from old Cortona above. So beautiful to include for a perfect photo op scenery from the top of the old town.

I`m into photography and loved the way the old church stood out. I wish we would have gone inside. We were on our way to Celle, where St. Francis of Assisi lived at one time and just pulled over to take a photo of the church. Next time we`ll go inside.

The day I found the Chiesa di Santa Maria, I was the only person in the church except for the lone man who was cleaning it.....the perfect time to say my prayers for the day. Its seemingly plain exterior belies the lovely and serene interior. Was worth the trek down and back up the moderately long path to the main... More
