This tower, which has two names, the Torre dell'Orologio (the clock tower) and the Porta di Mezzo, (the middle gate), was the original entrance of medieval Taormina. It was built in the XII. century on existing ancient foundations of the Roman Tauromenium.
The tower was destroyed by French troops and was rebuilt in 1769. The mechanical clock is from the XIX. century.
Our guide told us that the mosaic of the Madonna with the Child is a recent addition.

Piazza IX Aprile is the main square of Taormina. This famous square is located in the middle of the Corso Umberto I. It has some nice old buildings: San Giorgio Church and San Giuseppe Church and the clock tower with a Madonna mosaic (Torre dell’ Orologio). It’s also a gate to the Old town. It’s worth a photo.

The main square of Taormina - stop here for a beautiful view of the surrounding water, island and Mount Etna! Food places surrounding this spot are also really lovely. Definitely a must see if you're coming here for the first time.

Enchanting Taormina, the first touristic city of Sicily Island. It's a bijoux, from the mount you could appreciate the coast.

The clock tower is also the entry to the old city. From here on it feels like you time travel, the wonderful Corso Umberto will take to the most important places in Taormina.

In front of the clock tower you have Piazza IX Aprile, so called because on April 9, 1860, rumors stating that Giuseppe Garibaldi had landed on Sicily, to liberate the island from the Bourbon king. Unfortunately, the rumors were false, and he arrived in western Sicily a month later, on May 9.
On the other side is the preserved medieval Taormina where the streets are more narrow and even the stores fronts have kept their medieval character.

Not amazing nor really special.
No Matter what, you'll walk Corso Umberto since it leads you to all the interesting places in Old Taormina: from Porta Catania to Porta Messina, or the other way around, you'll pass then by several Piazza's like this Piazza IX Aprile on which stands this small tower.
By the way, Piazza IX Aprile is, I believe, the most interesting Piazza in Taormina with its beautiful view to the sea.
We also had the chance to see a wedding
As I already wrote, and compared to the many other famous Italian towers in Italy, this one is not really extraordinary nor amazing.
It is indeed beautiful but not that special to make you visit Taormina specially for it.
So just stroll Corso Umberto, stop at this Piazza, get maybe in this tower and stop to admire the fantastic sea view as do all the other tourists in Taormina, take some pictures...And then continue your visit.

This hard to miss tower sits atop the Catania gate, entry point to the old town and the Corso Umberto. It is another defining structure adding to the significance of the Piazza Aprile.

This gateway is situated about half way along Corso Umberto and by the Piazza IX Aprile [the largest square in the town] On one wall you will see a mosaic. The cafe at the side of the tower, Wunderbar, was frequented by Liz Taylor and Richard Burton and it is expensive!!!!

Quite interesting old clock and very useful, too. Besides the obvious use of telling time, it's also on a half-way between Porta Messina and Porta Catania, two main entrances to Taormina.
