Just bump into this site when we were about to leave the Taormona and go for a train. A large structure formed by a brick retaining Roman walls, 122 meters long. The construction dates back to the 2nd Centrury AD. It is hiddedn from Taormina hustle nd bustle.

Reasonably well cared for and a great reminder of how much ancient world is sitting underneath modern Taormina as well as how much was destroyed over the years to make way for the new.

It only takes 5 minutes to visit but is very interesting with boards to explain the history. The Naumachia is in the main part of Taormina and so is easy to visit as you're wandering the streets.

A lovely Roman wall with a beautiful garden maintained by a local club with great care. Literally off the Corso so you won't need to go out of your way. Definitely take a peek and stroll through the garden. There is a cross stairway (modern) that I wouldn't want to cross. We had it all to ourselves on a beautiful day.

The so-called 'Naumachia' is a bit of a mystery with many theories on what it actually was. It is clearly not a naumachia in the Roma sense of a basin constructed to stage naval battles for the entertainment of citizens. It is considered that it may have been a gymnasium or a part of a water storage system for Taormina and the surrounding areas. Whatever it was, it is now a tranquil spot a few dozen metres off the busy Corso Umberto. Don't miss it .. .

hard to find and nothing worth looking at. Naumachia means naval battle. There wasn't one, or anything much related to one, which is reasonable a couple of hundred feet above sea level.
