The oldest city gate of Taormina, it has been rebuilt over the years and leads to the main street through the town, Corso Umberto I. Outside is the luxury Exelsior Hotel built in Moorish style, and inside is the Palazzo Duchi di San Stefano close...More

One of two ancient entrances of the city (along with Porta Messina at the other end of Corso Umberto). Today’s look is the final result of various changes and restoration, the most recent one is from the 15th century, made by the Aragonese (which coat-of-arms...More

This is one of the main gateways that tour groups surge through to explore the Corso Umberto. It is so ordinary that I seriously felt like giving it a 2! It is quite nice to have a coffee just outside the gate and watch the...More

Theirs nothing to write home about, but before you enter on the left hand side there is a man with a small open truck selling fruit and vegetables at a reasonable price, just make sure you pick the fruit or vegetables.

If you have taken the gondola and walked along via Pirandello, Porta Catania will greet you into the center of town onto corso Umberto.

There are two gateways to the central part of the village of Taormina. The Porta Catania is the less ornate of the two. It is not much more than a stone archway. While we were walking through the village, we only paused briefly to look...More

The other of the two famous gates gates of Taormina. Nowadays the Porta is not more than a ruin., but it leads into the beautiful city of old.

We will be staying on the Porto Catania side on our next visit, as it has more tourist friendly sites than the Porto Messina side. Porta Catania also has the only mini food market in the area....and that made our stay all the better....Its also...More

This is the other gate to Taormina, the one which is from the south, where Catania is located (hence the name). Part of the old walls, and very interesting to compare to Porta Messina, which is on the other side of city.
