Overll disappointed with this site. Quite expensive to get in and the star attraction (the amphitheatre) is completely covered over with modern seating and loads of technology because they hold open are shows there . Felt I didn't learn very much from the visit

Think of the slaves including prisoners from the endless Mediterranean wars who carved out this rock for building material. An errie place to visit. Can think of nothing like it. Yes, see it along with the Greek theatre.

Visited as part of a tour group . We had an audio system which was helpful to hear our local guide .However she told us every fact she had ever learned & the tour became boring.

There were some interesting sculptures. Part of the site had been a prison apparently where the “ ear” was situated & the acoustics were good .

Some nice plants & trees .

The amphitheater was covered in scaffolding as it’s used for concerts etc. , a shame but it must be a brilliant setting to be in to see a performance.

The visit was ok but spoiled for us by an overwhelming amount of information from the guide .

The Ear of Dionysius is the major attraction in the latomy of Paradise. This artificial cave has been dug in a way that amplifies the sounds emitted inside it. It is not known if it was excavated with this feature intentionally but the effect is impressive. The name seems to have been given by Caravaggio and refers to the legend according to which Dionysus used this sound amplification effect to listen from above to what his prisoners condemned to the excavation whispered and plotted. When we were there, a Mitoraj head was positioned at the bottom as well as at the entrance. Of course the site could be kept better but it is unmissable anyway.

It is known as the "Quarry of Heaven." It is a quarry where the ancient Greeks quarried limestone to build their colony. The huge cave was also used as a prison, and the painter Caravaggio named it "Dionysius' Ear" based on the legend that Dionysius built it to hear the voices of prisoners.

Inside the archaeological park, it is one of the few usable attractions. Yes, because only after 1) having parked and having been robbed by illegal parkers who curiously all wore a uniform boasting of belonging to the municipality of Syracuse and obviously as usual in those parts without EVER a traffic policeman, 2) having queued interminable under the sun to get 4 entry tickets which were not cheap at all, 3) having discovered that more than 70% of the archaeological park is cordoned off and therefore not usable!.... We have reached the ears of Dionisio. What to say? Beautiful place, uncultivated, poorly cared for, wild, not usable and expensive. I could have spent my time better! Sin...

Interesting history of the area used as a prison quarry . Takes about 30 minutes to walk up from the main area of the city. The Greek theatre was the other important thing to see besides the Ear of Dionysius which is a cave once used as a prison. Not alot of shade so take water with you. There is a good cafe at the start/ end of your visit. There are are a lot of modern art statues and other remains which unless you have a guide are really just ruins. Interesting to visit in Syracuse.

Dionysius' ear is very famous because, thanks to its artificial shape hollowed out like a donkey's ear, it amplifies sounds in a surprising way...so much so that each of us cannot help but scream inside to realize it!
This attraction in the archaeological park of Neapolis, in my opinion, should cost less and I sincerely agree with tourists when they complain about all this, especially the fact that it is not kept up that well! Even the outdoor parking spaces...very expensive!!!

A fantastic place, and rich in history, a stone's throw from the center of Syracuse. A visit to the archaeological park is a must if you are visiting the city. Certainly some things are definitely in need of improvement, such as general maintenance or the map provided for the unclear and detailed view of the park, but the stories that tell these places are timeless. The Ear of Dionysus is perhaps the most famous Attraction of the archaeological park, which however has other wonders not to be missed such as the Greek theater or the latomie and necropolis. In fact it is a deep cave where due to the particular conformation you can hear a marked echo of what is said. It is interesting to know the history of this cave and Dionysus, for this Recommendation to buy the Audio Guide along with the ticket. The visit of the park lasts about 2 hours and it is advisable to do it with cool weather because even if there are several trees and shaded areas the heat feels a lot.

This is situated a UNESCO sight . There is no map given with ticket , just one on a wall which you can take a photo of but is of no use what so ever ! For such an important site , information was awful. We saw other folk walking around looking list trying to find the main sites ! No good for wheel chair uses , even though there is wheelchair access at the entrances , the hills are very steep.
