- Mary SMoultonborough, New Hampshire32 contributionsCheese please, make it parmesan. Our group guide encouraged us to walk through and see all that Siracusa had to offer at this mercato. With very little time to shop my goal was cheese. While we did pass the famous sandwich shop with a line out the door we continued into the busy market area. Fish was displayed beautifully and looked so fresh. Spices, nuts and huge mounds of tomato paste were very doing a brisk business with local cooks. If only I could bring it all home. We spotted a cheese stand with large wedges of parmesan already shrink wrapped. The price seemed reasonable and the man selling was charming. No haggling, we paid the man! If you go ask you guide to accompany you to help find deals and what is in season. This market also has lots of clothing, belts, ceramics, handbags and trinkets seen all over Sicily.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten November 20, 2023
- Cherry_WonderdogNew England4,680 contributionsFun to visit, but not terribly uniqueWe had seen accolades for the Ortigia market in media posts so it was a disappointment to hear from our hotel that it was open every day but the weekend when we were in town. When our day of departure Monday rolled in, however, Cherry Wonderdog was not to be denied. We made our way across Ortigia by foot and arrived at Il Mercato by the time it opened at 10 AM. Like many other open air markets in Europe, it was a festival of colors, sounds, and culinary temptation. One thing that was starkly different at this market, however, was the language. The vendors spoke Italian, so it was more difficult for us to understand. We could figure out basically what was being said though. “Best fruit in town right here!” “Today we have a promotion on this item – buy two kilos and get one free.” “Get your fish here! Get your fish!” The sounds were distinctly Sicilian – a shade of Italian quite lyrical in style, equally forceful in delivery. Most of the clothing in the market was low grade, but the locally grown food, aromatic spices, and layers of slimy fish looked appetizing. We treated ourselves to a fresh-squeezed pomegranate and lemon juice cocktail. The crowds were picking up as we made our way out of the market towards our next destination, La Chiesa di San Filippo Apostolo. Cherry Wonderdog’s verdict was that Il Mercato di Ortigia was well worth visiting but not a “must see”; the world would not have come to an end if we had left Ortigia without seeing it.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 12, 2024
- Matthew PLondon, United Kingdom6,005 contributionsNice marketVery busy market, most of the stalls selling the same sort of stuff. Worth a walk and a browse, if you like oysters it's cheaper here and they throw in a glass of wine to wash it down. Very hot and it seems to keep going for ever, you get a motorbike going through the middle if your lucky. Sit in one of the bars and have a cold one and people watch, guzzling oysters and wine, sounds delightful.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 6, 2024
- MaryBQ9468GGNew York City, New York7 contributionsOrtigia marketTypical Europe market. Fun with lots of good and bad smells and sights . I spent a week in Ortigia so went to the market 4 times to buy produce and meats as we stayed in an AIRBNB so we had lots opportunity to cook in. I found most of the produce best in town along with the best butcher. What i don’t understand is the lack of hygiene in some of the stands such as fresh fish sitting out in the August heat with flies dodging. Dried fruits with bees swarming and dodging. Unrefrigerated cheese stands. If you look beyond these issues there are plenty of vendors that display food properly in store fronts with refrigerated products and protected glass which makes ortigia worth visiting. *** surprised the ortigia health/agricultural department allows thisVisited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 25, 2024

A nice market but not as big as Mercato ogni giorno Dominca in Piazza Santa Luccia which is also a flea market.
Still if you stay in Ortigia, you can visit it as it is really close to the Apollo Temple and the other attractions.
There are many things that can catch your eyes and might be worth the bargaining ...and the purchasing.
At night, when it closes the restaurants open and it is still a quite enjoyable place to be

We bought a kilogram of mantis shrimp in a covered private shop. There was no meat inside, completely, almost empty. We feel cheated. I also lost time cooking.
We also bought vegetables and fruits in other tents, everything was fresh and delicious.

Dishonest and then yelled at me when I refused to buy. At the spice and nut stand. Prices weren’t marked so he charged whatever. Glad I walked away, but it was annoying that he tried to guilt me into buying. Don’t even stop at this stand.

Loved visiting the Mercato in Siracusa. It's quite the experience with beautiful fish, fruits and vegetables. The stands close pretty early int h afternoon so be sure to get there early. If you don't have a place to cook there are plenty of dried fruits you can get and they have a few oyster stands with sparkling wine. I also saw a fried seafood stand to get a cone of calamari.

We visited the markets for some fresh fruits and vegetable and I ended up having the best seafood ever from one of the stalls - freshly caught octopus and calamari. There is also an amazing panini store who's owner gives out samples of delicious cheeses - the smoked mozzarella was amazing! We spent about about 1 hour here even though its not that big. But thats because we were mostly stuffing out faces!

This market is located next to the Tempio di Apollo. It is not as big (on 2 streets) as those of Palermo for example, but it is very endearing, .
The smells are delicious, the singing voices of the merchants are very pleasant, and the products offered on stalls are just beautiful. Spada... Fish and vongole still wriggling. Spices, fruits and vegetables of all beauty. And wonderful Sicilian specialties (mandorla di Avola, pistacchio di Bronte, pomodori di Pachino, ...). And at very reasonable prices...
At the bend of Via Trento fishermen prepare sea urchins (ricci) and offer them in plastic cups for 15 € (the equivalent of 30-35 sea urchins...!!!).
It's quite busy, and it's better to go not too late in the morning.
Do not miss it while visiting the Siracusa region.

The market is busy in the morning with locals shopping for fish, meat, poultry, fruits, spices, veggies, etc. There are few tourists in the off-season - especially when we were here - January 2018. So, it was enjoyable to stroll through the market which is much smaller than Catania's market but everything you need is here. A must stop for a huge and delicious sandwich (panini) is at Caseificio Borderi - cost 5-Euro or USA $6.00. There are a few very good restaurants within the 2 block/street market - especially if you like fresh seafood - from the Ionian Sea. A must see when in Catania between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

This market is rather small and there is nothing about it that makes it stand out from others such as the one in Palermo to mention one in the same region and style, also outdoors street market although way bigger and authentic, less tourist oriented. But it really fades away compared with other mediterranean markets such as those in Barcelona, Málaga, or almost anyone in Morocco (although these are a bit too hectic).

Are they open every day and are the markets in both Syracuse and Ortigia? Thanks.

Hi thanks for your post regarding the market at Syracuse. I'm trying to find the market in Syracuse that has stuff other than food.
A friend of mine (I live in Australia) brought me back from beautiful pearls that she bought for me in the market in Syracuse. Do they have stuff other than food in this market? Thanks in advance. Robyn

Do they have jewellery in the markets in Ortigia or Syracuse? Is the trip to Syracuse worthwhile (from Taormina)?
Written October 24, 2017
I do not recall any jewellery on sale in the markets in Ortigia. There are a few high-end shops on the Corso.
A visit to Syracuse is a very good idea. There is great architecture in Ortigia; the Duomo, for example. And plenty of history going back to Archimedes' era. If you like archeology, the museum in Syracuse is excellent, and there is a Greek theatre like the one in Taormina.
