Had a truly amazing trip to Cavegrande. Was worried about the walk but it was really no problem for 4 of us including a 7 & 11 yr old.
Is essentially a 2k walk downhill (40mins) thru amazing scenery and then you come to the most idyllic setting of ravines and waterfalls. The water was absolutely gorgeous and some great jumps for the kids.
The walk back up was slightly more arduous but took less than an hour and was more than worth it for the natural scenery.
& it didn’t cost a penny, which is almost unheard of on holiday.
Loved it.

Wonderful landscape, a bit demanding walk, but it is worth to take effort to get and swim there. Beautiful pools, cold, refreshing water, especially during hot summer days is a pure pleasure...I expected to be crowded but it wasn't (Late July visit)

It is, indeed, a beautiful place, but you must be well equipped. We went there in June, 2013, it was already hot outside, and I got quite sick at returning (not a nice experience..). You must have appropiate shoes, enough water, something to cover your head, and be prepared for a long walk (about 2-3 km till the small lakes, on a difficult road..). I would not recommend this place for families with children (the road is not easy). Oh, and no bathrooms on the road!

The paths down to Cavagrande were closed when we got there, after disastrous fires in late June 2014. Plenty of disappointed visitors at the entrance looking down towards the stunning lakes far below, but the path is not safe so the guards can't let people in. 'Come back next year' was the advice.

Take water and suntan lotion with you when you go. You can manage with sandals, but I suggest jogging shoes or similar. The steep path goes down in to a deep canyon. It takes time to walk down and back up.
If you have problems with knees, don't go there. You don't need to be an ironman to go there but take it easy. And remember to drink.
Absolutely worth a visit!

the place is simply amazing. We went in April when everything was so green and nice. One has to go on a sunny day because the path is totally created by the nature and if its raining it may be slippery or completely no accessible.

The walk is really long and tiring and extremely exhausting. Too go down is not that difficult but to climb up...well its a challenge.

if you like the views and the nature you should do it. But few tips:

take a lot of water
comfortable shoes
camera for pictures

and get ready for a really nice walk in peace (there is no phone reception)

If you like hiking, this is a place for you. Don’t come here in July or August, it would be simply too much tourists. It will ruin your experience. Even in mid-October there were several dozen hikers, and this is not very huge place…
Take good hiking shoes with hard sole, plenty of water and picnic. You will also need an off line google maps, it works well with GPS, because direction how to arrive there are not really clear. Also, once you find the entry(we arrived from Avola with SP4, but there is also other entry from Noto), people in Information office speak only Italian. So you need to make research upfront, to learn history of this place. Once you arrive here, there are several trails, we did two of them, on with panoramic views( it means you go up/down, rather short) and the other more flat, that follows a river. The second one can take few hours, but is worth to do it. Here you pass a river several times on the stones, the environment is very picturesque.

The most surprising part of the the Cavagrande is the part 'Carrubbella'. It is a walk into the canyon where the stream 'Fiume Cassibile' is. At some point you can do a swim in a deep part of the stream at a cascade, where it is a little bit a paradise.
The walk around is about a 6 to 8 km with magnificent views inside the canyon. You won't regret and forget this walk.

We found a small note about the Riserva Naturale Cavagrande del Cassibile in our guidebook (also known as Laghetti Di Cavagrande- sometimes it is just signed Cavagrande) and were so glad that we checked it out. If you'd like to combine a short hike with a refreshing swim, it is a real gem. It is free but you have to sign in with the park attendant. The walk down to the gorge takes about 30 mins and is all steep steps and turns on rocky terrain. Have water with you (or take down a whole picnic lunch). I walked with hiking sandals and was fine. At the bottom there are the principal pools - a series of 3 or 4 (depending on how you count) fresh water pools after a brief hike going right, or other pools, going left. We didn't visit these other pools but get a sense that they were more shallow (but probably more private as well).

At the principal pools there is a bit of shade, flat areas on stones to spread towels, and cascading water falls leading to pools, some quite deep. The water is on the cool side but not cold, and deep enough is some places to dive in. There were lots of tadpoles in the shallower sections (June). It seems popular with tourists in the know (during the week there were a fair number of people but it wasn't crowded) and local twenty somethings (we went again on a Sunday and there were lots and lots of them).

With a picnic lunch, some towels and a few hours ahead of you, it is pure heaven.

The walk up is about 45 mins to an hour, depending on how many breaks you take. There is a bar/cafe up top (for ice cream or some other treat) and a vendor selling fruit.

A certain level of fitness helps but I saw someone walk down in a leg brace! Where there is a will there is a way.

The gorge at Cavagrande is spectacular and well worth the effort of the walk down and hike back up. There is no official entrance - at the car park you'll see a fence - which has been closed officially - but the crates there make it possible to scale the fence and begin the walk down the trail.

We're pretty fit adults and it took us 45 mins down and 35 mins back up. But we saw pretty young kids doing it and people taking it quite slow and easy. Take your time, take water and perhaps avoid the heat of the day. We did it around 4pm

The prize for the effort are the series of pools at the base. My advice is to keep walking right to last pool - as tired and in need of a swim as you'll be - it's worth it. At 4-5pm it was relatively quiet at the pools and so tranquil and beautiful. The water is incredible.

Save some time, energy and water for the hike back up. And then there is a bar at the top to buy a well deserved beer and ice cream!
