We were there on Sunday morning and found out that there is a flea market. The stuff there is beautiful! Really worth coming by. Special joy is to negotiate about the price. I bought two lovely silber bracelets, the price was negotiated from 30€ to 23€ :D Around 1pm market slowly starts to close. By the way, in the park you can find a lot of shadow under huge banyan trees!

This is a piazza with a great deal going on even though if you settle down for a coffee and cannoli you might be persuaded that the pony and trap opposite by the dried up fountain is all there is.
This Piazza was one of the aristocratic heartlands of the old Palermo - and also is home to the bell tower from which the rising against the Bourbons in 1860s was announced - the tower of the Franciscan church which is well worth a visit. (Inside and in its courtyard some wonderful art work on the theme of Franciscan spirituality - they have been present in Palermo since the thirteenth century).
The Garibaldi public gardens are worth a visit as you make your way across to the castle of the inquisition - Sicily started early and finished last being under the grip of Spain during this period. The Castle is seriously worth a prolonged 2 hour visit - much to see and consider.
The gardens have 2 well endowed Bao bab trees which have extended their root systems across an extensive area of garden. The iron work made in Trapani and dating from the nineteenth century is worth consideration especially the uprights festooned with dead rabbits, pheasants and grouse (in wrought iron) from a days aristocratic shoot.
There is also the museum of wine in the corner by the Franciscan church - so your coffee has turned into a 3-4 hour explore!!

The piazza is near the sea front and was not far from our hotel. After a bit of sightseeing, we repaired to the piazza and its lovely garden (Garibaldi Garden) for lunch and to watch the hawkers go about their business. There are cafes to buy coffee and meals (and takeaway lunch). It was a Thursday when we were there so the flea market was not very big (Saturday and Sunday is better so we were told).
Another interesting item was the memorial to a New York undercover police officer who was gunned down in the square by the Mafia while he was in Palermo on an investigation (1909).

The piazza is well kept as well as the garden and trees that are incredibly big and old and also particular. The main attraction here in fact are the trees which fill nearly alle the piazza.

All very nice, we went on a sunday and there was a flea market. A bit more than a boot sale - but not a lot more.

Lovely park in the historic district. It has wonderful walking paths, and a giant ficus tree in the center. Very peaceful now, but in the past the area was used for hangings during the inquisition.

Piazza Mariana is a square/plaza on Cassaro Street, in the Kalsa quarter, and in Palermo’s historic center. The piazza is dominated by the phenomenal Garibaldi Garden. During the Middle Ages this area was a swamp and connected to Palermo’s ancient port, The Cala. The area was cleared in the 14th century, and later used by the Inquisition for convictions. A main feature is the Baroque Fontana del Garraffo, a named derived from the Arabic word ‘gharraf’ meaning abundance of water, sculpted by Gioacchino Vitagliano in 1698.

After a lovely walk along the sea front we had heard there was a market here on Saturday morning. It was very quiet and low key with just around 20 stalls - cross between an antiques and flea market. One stall was selling Touraeg jewellery so picked up a lovely pair of earrings. Very mellow and pleasant.

This is a beautiful piazza in the evening, with restaurants, the Giardino Garibaldi - a lovely garden with magnificent old fica trees that are right our of Grimms fairly tales, and the Palazzo Preti where you can take tour and learn all about the terrible Inquisition.

We visited this Roman Hunting Lodge 30 years ago when it was they were still unearthing it. We returned again with our family and cousins who live there in Sicily. They turned it into a wonderful attraction worthy of historic proportions. The castle depicted life as it was in Roman times The excellent mosaics demonstrated life at the castle with descriptions of activities during that time including mosaics of Romans capturing animals from Africa (Tunisia) and bringing them to this hunting lodge. The mosaics depicted the style and dress of the day. GREAT EXPERIENCE ! MUST SEE !!!
