Santa Maria La Nova, from my point of view is one of the most beautiful churches in the city, a bit 'hidden and out of the tourism trail, it is located a short distance from the famous Vucciria market and a few hundred meters from the central Via Roma.
Church very old and small, dating from AD 1,300.
The beautiful porch at the entrance but also the beautiful church inside. A short visit is absolutely recommended.

The church is located in the Castellammare district, a short distance from the Cala and what was once the Porta Carbone. Curiously, the external appearance, both the front façade and the left side (the right is not visible) look more like a palace than anything else. The church was built during the 16th century on a pre-existing place of worship (from the 14th century); the facade is in fact not visible because it is located behind a portico and the façade above built in neo-Gothic style in the 19th century. The Gothic-Catalan portico is certainly the most externally interesting element: three lowered arches supported by two slender columns and two pillars on the sides, the latter incorporating elegant infilled niches on two levels; the vaults then present the classic interweaving of Gothic ribs. Interior with three naves separated by columns resting on high pedestals and ending with a characteristic octagonal tribune which acts as a presbytery and onto which five chapels open (including the largest). The decorative apparatus is from the eighteenth century and the stuccos present (the ones around the seventeenth-century canvas of the main altar are valuable) are by Procopio Serpotta (son of Giacomo). On the right side nave in the first and third span there are two niches with eighteenth-century paintings (the one in the third span is by Antonio Manno), while in the second span there is a real chapel where, in addition to the painting by Antonio Manno above the altar , there are two monumental tombs (left side) and, at the time of our visit, there were the carts (with related simulacra) used in the Good Friday procession for the transport of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows; in the fourth span there is access to the sacristy surmounted by a small balcony and next to another sepulchral monument. On the left side nave there are niches in the first three bays (with paintings by Antonio Manno in the first and third, while in the second there is an eighteenth-century crucifix hanging and an urn with the Dead Christ underneath) and the side entrance in the fourth bay, surmounted by a small balcony (as in the right nave). Overall, both outside and inside, it is a beautiful church, although not among the most interesting in the city.

Finding myself in front of it by chance and seeing it open as is my custom, I immediately entered intrigued.
No surprises, in fact, a lot of desolation.
