Pilgrimage before doctors
Jan 2020
When poor Sicilians couldn't afford doctors their only resort was their faith and a pilgrimage up Mount Pellegrino to Saint Rosalia's sanctuary. The views driving up are spectacular for tourists but that's not what people on their knees going the pilgrim's way saw or why they went. The grotto of baby's bibs and motor bike helmets bespeak sadder, more basic concerns that people still do not rely solely on modern medicine to solve. St Rosalia, patron saint of Palermo, died aged only 35 in 1566, her short life controversial because women were not supposed to live as hermits in caves. Look up to where the limestone cave claws its way and see the eccentric plumbing that channels drips away from pilgrims' and visitors' heads.

Thanks for your review. I would like to specify that St. Rosalia died around 1170 and not in 1566.

Very special sanctuary of the patron of Palermo. Well preserved, inspiring and charming place of worship, admiration and reflection. Impressive creativity, organization and organization. Please admire the ceiling and the water collection system there. Adorable.

Beautiful Palermo, the capital of Sicily Island, with its great monuments and attractions. I suggest you to visit the "Santuario di Santa Rosalia", a beautiful church and a great landscape.

great morning excursion from Palermo - bus up and walk down the trail
Sep 2019
Walked for about 30 mins from Palermo Centrale and took the 812 bus up to the church. Well worth the AMAT day ticket costing 3.50 euro.

Very impressed with the attention to detail on main and side altars and the lighting too. Having visited briefly, we then walked down the trail and marvelled at the views of the gorge and the greater Palermo area along the way. Took about 1.5 hours with our 3.5YO son. Met the return 812 bus on Martin Luther King boulevard within 2 minutes of completion.

Finally, while we saw others walking up too, I would recommend good shoes, suncreen and lots of liquid too. Could get very slippy in wet weather or autumn dew.

Nice church. Worth a quick visit
Jun 2019 • Family
We drove up a beautiful mountain and came to this church. It’s definitely worth the climb. What made it special was it’s unique structure. It’s built inside a cave. This makes it interesting and unique. I wouldn’t plan on spending copious amount of time here. Has some nice touristy shops down below

Sanctuary of Santa Rosalia and Monte Pellegrino
Jun 2019 • Family
we caught the 812 from Via Don Sturzo just around the corner to Teatro Politeama. Buy a day ticket from the kiosk just over the road to the bus stop. the buses are not as regular as some so check your times for your return at the bus stop. the ride is fantastic up Monte Pellegrino, sharp corners and hairy drops - but the views over the City are superb. the sanctuary is up a fair flight of steps - the grotto and sanctuary is absolutely beautiful, there was a family praying and making incantations to Santa Rosalia whilst we were there, which added to the overall spiritual ambiance.
down the flight of stairs there is a small plaza of cafes and souvenir stalls.we took advantage to walk further up the mountain to take in the views. All very tranquil and the buses all stick to the time table - don't worry if the bus appaers to take off 20 mins early as it goes further round the mountain then returns.

Amazingly spiritual place. Just short public bus ride up the mountain which is a little scary for a height scared person like me. Definitely a must see attraction if you’re in Palermo.

Extraordinary Shrine!
Dec 2018 • Family
We visited the Sanctuary of Santa Rosalia (the patron saint of Palermo) as part of shore excursion. The sanctuary church is located on top of Monte Pellegrino (elevation of 606 meters). The winding road to the summit provides spectacular views of Palermo. To enter the sanctuary, you have to ascend a long flight of steps, but it is definitely worth the climb. The sanctuary is in a beautiful grotto. It has wonderful positive energy, which we found to be very spiritually nourishing. There is a coffee shop nearby, which has great cappuccino and cornettos! Definitely worth a visit!

Must See
Apr 2019 • Couples
St. Rosalía was believed to have lived and died in this cave. This is a remarkable place on the mountain side in Palermo. I would recommend this to anyone as it has an energy force field when you enter it. The shrine inside is beautiful and when we went there were some musicians playing for a small service. Outside the shrine you can tough the “healing water.” This water is out on your body - on parts you want healed. There are also personal items from people who have visited or maybe from their families- as an offering for their healing. It was honestly a very moving site.
