A bit outside the historic/tourist center of Palermo and closer to where the locals live. We came here on our last morning in the wonderful city that is Palermo because I had read about the quality ceramics being produced here. We were in search of one-of-a-kind souvenirs and boy were we spoiled.
The owner (I am so sad I never got his name, but he was so kind and clearly proud of his shop) did not speak any English, so we communicated through google translate. He explained the style/origin/use of all the different ceramics in his store. The icing on top was that he took us to the back of his shop to show us where everything his made, there we found a woman painting each piece individually by hand. You could see what the pieces looked like from stage to stage.
Then he took us further into the back and showed us the kiln. He asked me to take a picture of him with his work, and I was only too happy to oblige. It was wonderful to see an artist in his element. What an amazing experience I won't soon forget.
Finally, when we were back in the shop and had selected the items we wanted to purchase, and he had carefully wrapped each one individually for our flight home, he gave us a discount on everything! He showed us that the price would have been 50 Euros, and he gave it to us for 45 Euros. This final act of kindness sealed the deal for us and I hope tourists like myself will continue to support this wonderful man, his artform and his business.
