But yes, in most rooms there are multiple paintings which are not lit. Not 'badly lit' NOT LIT. You look up at the ceiling to see where the problem is and you realise that along the lighting tracks, some fixtures are simply not operating. So either they can't be bothered to change dead lamps or the gallery can't cope with the load on the system. Either way, judging from the age of the reviews calling this out, this is not a problem GAM plan to solve for the forseeable future. If you are lucky or make a fuss, you will get a small discount but so normal has this situation become that there clearly is no conscience over charging the full price.

Fortunately, according to our taste, by and large, the unlit pictures were the less worthy ones but this wasn't always the case as GAM has a very high quality collection of fine art including some sculptures and so you are likely to experience more than a few disappointments as you struggle to cut thru the gloom.

It is probably worth saying that this is not a Modern Art Museum in the sense of Tate Modern, focussing on the 20th century, avant-garde, expressionist or cubist artists. It is a relatively traditional collection which just about makes its way into the pre-WW2 period but, for most part, with pieces which tend towards conservative tastes rather than the experimental.

If it wasnt for the lighting issue, I wouldnt have hesitated to give GAM 4 stars but given they also have a toilet paper problem (ie there is none in the whole building) I feel 3 blobs is generous.

Why doesn't everyone know about this and rave? We spent three and a half blissful hours here discovering superb paintings, marbles and bronzes. It is excellently themed and exhibited. It triumphs over the other "top" things to do here. A tie with Monreale.

Over a century of collections, this museum has gone to great lengths to evolve into a very fine collection. All the works were purchased or were in the Biennele in Venice. It has large pieces of Neo-Classicism as well as some fine examples of pointilism. Particularly love the one work by Struck, very moving.

A pleasant way to spend a good 3 to 4 hours. Take your time and enjoy a cup of coffee in the cafeteria to recharge and continue

We purchased a combi ticket for the permanent exhibition and also the temporary Leonardo di Vinci exhibition. First thing to say is that the fact that some of the exhibits are unlit (see various reviews below) you are informed of this before buying a ticket and your ticket is sold at a reduced rate as a result. The combi ticket was 12,00€ per person which was great value. The LdV exhibition explores his drawings and displays them alongside multimedia interactive modern interpretations. Very cleverly done with sound and projections. The permanent exhibition is a wonderful range of paintings and sculpture. Would thoroughly recommend particularly during the heat of the day. This would have got a 5-star review if it had it hadn’t been for some of the staff very noisily chatting to each other and/or having their mobile phones on all the time and not on silent!! Certainly spoilt the atmosphere at times. Nice gift shop. There’s also a cafeteria (didn’t try) too.

The visit was disappointing as we expected modern art. Instead we got a load of 19thC art and some early 20thC art which looked outside the general thrust of radical modernist European art of that period. Also it was specifically exhibiting Sicilian art and that was not made clear when we bought the tickets.
The building was very attractive.
If you enjoy classical art of a very conservative nature from Sicily, this gallery is for you!

Was relatively interesting, however our bags were taken from us as we entered and we were followed closely the whole time by at least 1 person. We were also told exactly what order we had to do the visit in. We couldn't just wander round looking at the exhibits. Very off-putting and eventually we left early.

Modern art can either appeal or repel, unfortunately I found the exhibits here were not to my taste although many others will find it appealing.

A previous review from three months ago mentioned some lighting not working, this is till the case and therefore some artwork very badly lit.
There was a lot of good art on display. There was no hand paper towels in any of the toilets nor any hot air dryers - sign on toilet wall stated ‘No paper’ sign looked more than a few days old - surely one of the three staff on duty (took two of them to tear off our ticket stub) could have gone out and got some paper towels!! Noticed a similar review on Google.

Not that much modern era - covers 19th to 1930. Some highlights were on loan. Worth a visit. Eve. Some good sculpture. Nice café. Friendly. Tiny amounts of monet and Picasso influenced stuff. A touch of pointillism here, of impressionism there. The history and landscape aspects are well done. The grumpy old men eating bread video exhibit is a bit baffling.

The Gallery, for obvious reasons, specialises in Sicilian art. It's a well structured museum and although you will not see any modern or contemporary master pieces it will give you a good introduction to Sicilian art.
