We ended up walking through the port end of this area one afternoon in search of the sea. We should have checked the map first, because instead of seeing the sea, there was the port on one side and the jail on the other! Another night we walked further inland from the port down Via Principe di Scordia. A few restaurants & bars along there, but a feeling of it being a bit edgy. No other tourists around, which was actually good, but just not the nicest area. Overflowing bins & a bit gritty.

We were fortunate to have a local show us around and it was beautiful. There is so much to see it really is essential to do so.

This quartiere is horrible. Is situated very close to Politeama theatre, and it is very dirty, popular, like a ghetto. ....It is incredibile to walk around and to see people that seemed to kill somebody, that are listening loud music, or are eating from the garbage.

Popular district in the north-eastern part of the city, just south-west of the Ucciardone prison; its central nucleus is made up of a series of orthogonal streets that unravel in both directions (in a herringbone pattern) from via Ettore Ximenes. The district escaped the building speculations of the 60s and 70s which involved this area, but having said this I didn't find anything interesting wandering around its streets (I didn't see the murals, although I must admit that we didn't do a systematic visit of the entire district). Once upon a time in some streets there was a market taking place in the morning, but we didn't see anything: asking local people it seems that the market hasn't existed for years. Ultimately I would say that there is nothing for a tourist to do or see here.
